I tried using a hatch mount bike rack on my 2016 for the first time today. The car’s parking sensors not only beeped, but the auto braking feature triggers when I put the car in reverse — I literally could not back out of my drive. Fortunately, no other gear today so I folded the rear see flat and carried two bikes inside. But I would like to use the rack — anyway to disable the problematic sensors?
Yes, you should be able to turn off that system. I must do so in my '24 RAV4 when using my hitch-mount bike rack, otherwise its backup auto-braking prevents the car from backing up. For your '16 Prius, I think it is called Intelligent Clearance Sonar. See your Owner's Manual, pages 348 and 140 of the second edition (March 2016 and later), I didn't look in the first edition (Feb and earlier). Thanks! I haven’t made the change yet but found the instructions in my owners manual — looks super easy to turn on and off.
