What was your best range on a single fill up while on a good road trip? I am hoping for 950 plus when we get ours with the 17's on.
You mean 950km on a single tank, not 950 US miles? 950km = 590miles. It is doable if you drive conservatively. PP is rated for 640 miles (1030km) with a full tank of gas and full charge using EPA rating of 54mpg and 25miles EV range. But this is to the empty tank. In the real world, your mileage and EV range varies vastly depending on the way you drive and driving conditions. And it is not advisable to drive the car to the empty tank. In my experience, with a speed of 75mph(120km/hr), the car gets ~48mpg and gets ~500miles of range when gas empty light comes on (there is still ~2gal of gas left). So, yeah, if I go all the way to empty, I can make 590miles even at that speed.
My best on a road trip was 604 miles (972 km). I thought I must have been about to run out of gas but it only took 10.26 gallons to fill it. I could probably have gone another 50 miles but that really would have been pushing it. I don't like getting below 1/4 tank on a road trip since you might not find a gas station where you think you will. 521 miles was my second longest tank on that 6,000 mile (9,656 km) trip.
Doing my first real roundtrip with our PP next week. Will be well over 2100kms by the time we're done. I'm wondering if its worth using the charge feature to charge the battery while driving at highway speeds of 125kph, then use EV once charged up? Or just let the car do it's thing and charge at a station when available.
Let the car do its thing. You'll spend more extra gas than the EV range given back. It's nice within the last leg of a trip when reaching your destination so you can drive quietly in EV in the city, but that's about it. If you stop to eat somewhere and/or sleep, use the plugshare app to find places with (preferably free) EV charging stations.
Dr Prius can show how many EV amps in both directions. Driving and regen. If curious about how Charge mode works DrPrius can help a lot. You'll see amps of regen between your fastest speeds driven all the way down to 20 mph where the amps drop off.
Hybrid Assistant does the same too with the addition of seeing (if you whish) both motors and engine power output displayed separately and their impact on the battery (top right) Or if you prefer, the RPM of all three and the relation between all of them
So looking at your views using Hybrid Assistant, what's your take on how Charge mode works at different MPH / Km/H
I don't much use Charge mode. I think I used it once (except maybe to try it for a few km when I got the car) since I bought it last year on the last leg of a long trip (which I don't usually take the Prius for) so the city driving (downtown Toronto) was in EV. Next time I use it, I'll take note of how it behaves.
