Induction hot plate

I have had two of them. The first one, around 2006, is not made any longer, but it was very good. Only used in power outages, which were common. Gave it to my BIL after he and my "witchy" sister split.

When I learned that one was no longer made, bought a Duxtop. No longer deal with long, frequent power outages, so I have hardly used it. Paid $60 for it, which is what I paid for the other model.

It works. Don't like it as well...they have several models. Love my built-in induction GE.

Hmmm, features....I focused on bare bones utility. I know having higher power is something you for sure want if your electrical system can handle it. We were sort of limited by our 1,000 watt Honda generator.

The cheap $15 ones with coils from Walmart are hit or miss... Sometimes they last several years or longer, sometimes not. The induction plate ones seem to fail quickly and are slower to heat up and less reliable if you're using it every day.

 

As I recall, before I bought the Duxtop, I poked around to see who recommended what and snooped at "tv set" photos to see what the pros used. Duxtop came in tops so I bought their cheapo model. As I said, it works.

If I did it over, I might go with Ikea.

I actually enjoy cooking and watch a fair chunk: Patti, Ming, Jacques.
I tend toward veggie, tho. Tofu is a friend along with tempeh. That's an environmental choice, also.

We have a single burner Duxtop, for energy efficiency, and use it more than the rangetop, despite not yet having acquired much compatible cookware. The only thing I don't like is a high-pitched whine under certain high power use, at settings 8-10. (This unit has 20 power steps, 0.5 to 10.)

This is our second unit. I don't recall just what we had for about 6 months last year, until it was destroyed by 'user error'. (For lack of counter space, I had placed it on a back corner of the rangetop, over a small electric resistance burner. One evening, while fatigued, spouse had a brain fart when boiling tea water, and turned on the range burner underneath, instead of the portable induction burner. Her sense of smell is very impaired, so the error wasn't detected until a smoke detector down the hall triggered. Took quite a while to air out the house. For the replacement unit, we re-arranged the counter appliances to make space for it, safe from any repeat user error). It didn't have any whine under any use condition, but had just 10 power steps.

When we eventually get around to replacing the old smooth-top range (repaired one control board failure already), we intend to convert fully to induction.

 

The whine. Yes, i forgot about the whine. Mine has it too.

Husband cannot hear it as he has high freq. hearing loss. He has issues hearing small children and female voices, also.

He considers it a blessing.

We bought one of these for the motorhome Amazon.com: GASLAND Chef 12 Inch Induction Cooktop, Built-in Electric Stovetop IH30BF with 2 Burners, 9 Power Levels, Slide Touch Control, Child Safety Lock, 1-99 Minutes Timer,240V : Appliances well, the Australian version, but basically the same thing. Worked a treat, unfortunately, the motorhome and house burnt to the ground the day after we arrived home from our 10 week holiday .... so we were left with the clothes we were standing in, the dog and our Silver gen 2 Prius .... waiting for insurance to get themselves into gear so we can buy another motorhome so we have some where to live while we wait for the house to be rebuilt ..... but we will be putting an induction cooktop in both, they are just so good.
The motorhome unit ran easily on the 5Kw inverter and batteries, the new house will be off grid as well, no more power company electrics boxes to burn the next one to the ground

While a convenient excuse, it is also very real. As hearing declines with age, the higher frequencies go first. I saw it in dad's behavior as his hearing loss advanced from severe to extreme. There was a stage where he missed understanding higher-pitched female voices much more than male and lower-pitched female voices. Though by his end, he 'heard' more from lip reading than through his hearing aids even on male voices too.

I could tell this in my own hearing, as determined from some lab equipment before I retired, when my upper frequency limit had dropped below a frequency that bothered me as a young engineer. While still above the limit of medical hearing tests the last time I was tested, I'll find out if that is still true at the next test in a few weeks. My spouse is now showing enough hearing loss to get hearing aids (though still optional, and she opted not ), and her chart very clearly shows much greater loss at higher frequencies, though not yet down at speech range. The pitch difference also shows in sounds that catch my attention, but she can't hear at all.
