Hi all. Is this pipe too low? I went over a speed bump and heard a metallic clang. It was one of those speed bumps that your wheels just glide over it on either side of it, but it’s raised in the middle under the car, if that makes sense. The bumps wasn’t the width of the road. Any exhaust guy I'll have that fixed up in 5 minutes No problem It's way too low needs to be heated and pushed up with the pipe holder let the exhaust guy uses I make them put mine up tight against the car but not touching anything so I can go over things without it ever scraping It should not be scraping It may also be getting time for springs and struts which has no bearing on this exhaust issue

@Has Raf can you clarify orientation/location of pic? Is that near the back, just behind engine, what side, it’s a front wheel or back wheel showing?

N’mind: as Tom says, hie thee to muffler shop.

Something looks unusual with the bends on that pipe. I wonder if this car had its catalytic converter, etc stolen somewhere in it's recent life and it now has some aftermarket pieces installed? I've seen some where the new cat pipe is a clamp design and gets installed without actually positioning the downstream pipe correctly. Not everyone rotates the pipe prior to clamping to ensure the correct road clearance is maintained. If so, all it takes is loosening the clamp, put a pipe wrench or channel locks on each pipe and spin the downstream one just a fraction of an inch to make that section of pipe lift up.

I just don't know...something about that bend looks really odd where it disappears and should go to the resonator

It's just easier for the muffler guy to do it he has heating Jack and everything ready once the car's up it's like a 6-minute job It's almost embarrassing and then that suckers tucked up under there like it belongs there and yes prying jerking cutting with sawzalls. Can definitely wreak havoc on how everything hangs Make sure you check all your rubbers while you're up under there usually the muffler shop will have these most people aren't going to have them lying around and are not going to know what to look for when they walk into the help section at the auto parts store

Have the exhaust inspected with the car raised on a lift. Maybe something is bent or a hanger has broken, but it should not hang down like that.

Thanks for the replies. So it’s definitely not how it’s supposed to be? Should I take it to Toyota, who know Priuses, or take it to a generic exhaust shop?

Update. Took it to my tyre/exhaust place. Turns out it had twisted, so the guy just twisted it back into place. Didn’t even charge me. But it still looks the same from underneath…

It's all good that can happen once he twisted it and got it untwisted he could have just heated it and pushed up on it with his little fabricated pipe holding jack and what have you but you know he's got other things on his mind or what have you anyway it can be made to tuck up in there nicely because it's not that way isn't really going to hurt anything but if you're in places or countries with bad roads it could get twisted again

I’m installing a lift kit, 1.6”, and new front struts and springs etc. So, if it’s still clanging after the lift kit etc, then I’ll look at better tucking, or ask the guy sort it again when he does the suspension upgrades. It’s the same guy doing the suspension work.

It just looks exactly the same as the above pic to be honest. He did fiddle with it though, and did look different when I left the shop…

Can you rotate it by hand? It would have to be awfully loose somewhere for it to be able to just flop back into the previous position all by itself.

I’ll take it elsewhere. Another mechanic said “that’s how the exhaust is, we can’t change it…” funny.
