On start up, engine shakes, check hybird system and then stalls.

    Hey, I hope yall who are reading are having a good week.

    Okay so this is alittle of a long story. But to get all the information I feel it's necessary.

    I got my Cat stolen and being in california, I wasn't able to afford a brand new one. So I was able to get someone to put on an out of state cat and weld it on.

    Since then I started to hear a rattling and start to get louder over time. Especially in the heat. I didn't have time to work on it for alittle. Fast forward this summer my check hybird system would turn on and i would only be able to run on gas. For alittle. Which I ended up getting a refurbish hybird battery viva hybird 2 go. They ended up telling me I had a misfire and I should switch my spark plugs before I drove the car. So I did I thought that would solve the issue. And it did for a second I thought it did. But the rattling from earlier was getting louder more often.

    Which I diagnosed as the egr cooler and valve being clogged. So thanks to Mendel Leisk I got the confidence to clean it myself. And after a weekend where I power washed the carbon build up out I put all the pieces back together. When I ran it now. The car shakes on start up, check hybird system turns on, and the engine stalls. I thought it just was sitting for a second so I need to start it up a couple of times. And my girlfriends dad said try to rev the engine so I did on the start up just alittle. Something popped and it smoked alittle.

    I tried starting it up since then after a couple of weeks and it still stalls. I even tried cutting the egr valve from the intake to stop it from shaking on start up but I have no idea what to do from now.

    I had engine codes such as

    P0607
    P0138
    P3190
    P0037

    And after this most recent time trying to start the car

    It has only giving me the p3190 code

    I feel it isn't the head gasket because my coolest didn't go down. But I could be wrong

    Let me know what yall think I should do. In terms of trouble shooting. Or if I should just bite the bullet and take it into a shop

    I am on the verge of giving up and grabbing a toyota hilux.

    Ps I have video of the start up. If someone can let me know how too add it in.

    I appreciate yall reading.

    My untested, unproven, hotly contested theory:

    EGR system (including intake manifold EGR passages) clog up with carbon, which causes several things to happen:

    1. Carbon layer on the "cooler"* radiator clogs/insulates it, reducing exhaust gas flow AND raising exhaust gas temperature.
    2. Carbon build-up on any and all components reducing exhaust gas flow.
    3. Uneven carbon clogging in the intake manifold EGR passages means some cylinders are completly starved of exhaust gas, while others still have some flow.

    In concert, the above cause the engine to run hotter than design, and unevenly hotter, with cylinders one and two leading the pack.

    Head gasket fails, typically on the exhaust side, between cylinders one and two, allowing coolant to seep into one or both cylinders.

    Car is driven, coolant system builds up some pressure, and put away for the night. Overnight coolant slow-but-sure seeps into the compromised cylinders.

    In the morning you start the car, hear slamming, which is the sound of virtually uncompressible coolant fighting with a piston.

    Now you clean the EGR system. Would you expect the head gasket to "heal itself"?

    * Toyota refers to this component as "pipe". I think "cooler" is more succinct, and it's the colloquial term mostly used here.
