Does anyone know if it's possible to download & install firmware & infotainment updates without having to use the Toyota App? I connected the car to Wi-Fi and it says no updates available... while also not having a button to check for updates.
Is this something that's supposed to happen OTA (over the air) or only from the app? Could a dealership do the update if requested, for free?
I'm pretty sure my 23 XLE has had zero updates in over 6 months.
And another question, would these updates also update the car functionality (improving the camera software, drive assist, bug fixes), or do they only apply to the screen and entertainment?

Manual says you need to be all signed up to get OTA updates. I've not seen any updates, but then I've not heard that there have been any updates in Europe for people who are signed up.

I did have a couple of "update error" indications though that went away. Apparently if there was an update it would prompt you for when to install it, which can take a while.

I think there may have been some US updates, but no user-visible changes in them.

I believe the updates could cover stuff like drive assist.

Thanks for the info! I guess I'm not missing much so far. It's too bad Toyota won't allow an offline update option (USB, SD card, etc).

Timely topic for me. I am about to ditch the “stealership” for maintenance on my RAV4 as it is out of warranty. I will do the same with my ’24 Prius when the time is right. The only issue I am concerned with are the software updates provided by the dealer during their periodic maintenance. How would one even know there is an update?

You could go into your infotainment screen general settings, somewhere in there it shows several software versions for the media player and stuff like that. Take a picture and compare that to your next dealership visit version after.
I have a feeling you won't get any dealership software updates unless you ask for it, or if it's mandatory from Toyota (a safety fix, for example).

Very interesting - I'm not sure what you mean by "connected the car to Wi-Fi"?

My "Connected Services" subscription just expired July 1, 2024 (USA version 2023 Prime XSE ). There were no updates of any kind (function "defect" or safety issue) from July 1, 2023 till June 30, 2024 for my car.

Pg 282 of my Owners manual states:
Meaning that only the dealer will be able to update my car. I am pretty confident that only a safety recall on the software will cause an update to even be available. If the update is a mandatory safety recall there will be no charge for the dealer to update the vehicle.

Since the Connected Services subscription expired, the Toyota App has shown a totally bogus "54 mi Distance To Empty" and always states "100% Charged" (The Charge Info page says "54 mi est. range without A/C EV range", and "0 miles HV range". Got to love that - I have never managed over 46 miles EV, and the car shows 473 miles estimated HV range when full.

I can only modify the charging schedule in the vehicle - App says "Error - Changes Cannot Be Performed".

Even with the Connected Services subscription expired, some services of the app still function:
    - Clicking on Info:
    -- Subscriptions:
-- Vehicle Software: "Your Software is Up to Date, There are no software updates at this time"

    - Clicking on Status:
-- Tire Pressure: "Tire Status Updated: Yesterday at 8:48 PM"

    - Clicking on Health:
-- Safety Recalls: "Safety Recall 24TA06 - Rear Door May Open While Driving"
-- Service Campaigns: "No Service campaigns"
-- Vehicle Alerts: "No vehicle alerts"
    -- Key Fob: "Good"
    -- Vehicle Health Report:
--- Vehicle Status: Miles Driven - is up to date, "Smart Key Battery is good", Quantity of Engine Oil: "at the required level"
