Just purchased my first Prius, a 2009 with JBL 9-Speaker System. Immediately bought a "Carplay" radio: There is a link to the actual unit in the youtube link: it is the "ASURE 9" Touchscreen for 2009 Prius" However, Im concerned about the compatibility with the JBL system. In the video, I can see the JBL logos and assume he has it in his car, and the unit seemed to be plug and play. However, the description on amazon says two things: that it is compatible with the JBL Amplifier, but it does not work with 6+ speaker systems. Couple this conflicting/confusing data with the plethora of topics/threads on JBL system compatibility w/ aftermarket touchscreen radios, and my head is about ready to explode. I will be trying an install this weekend and will report back, but ahead of that, wondering if anyone has any experience or opinion on whether this will work?
Confirmed that this unit was plug and play. Very easy to install and works with the JBL system. All 9 speakers work in addition to steering wheel controls.
Thanks for following up. Just picked up a 2005 on the cheap with a failed hybrid battery and rebuilt that. A head unit like this is in it's future, good to know it'll work with my JBL system. Happy with it so far?
Im getting this unit as well, for my 2009 prius. I assume you didn't do anything but plug and play. Was wondering if the climate control on the steering wheel (A/C on off and temp up down buttons) are working off the bat after installation? And the climate / AC buttons on the original MFD at top still working as well? Asking this because I read somewhere and saw some youtube similar installation that you need to add/install a resistor to make those work? Thanks for the reply in advance.
Sorry for the delay here - I DID have to install an included resistor into the two pin-outs of a connector. I wouldnt sweat that part - it is very straight forward and easy. This step allowed the climate control to work. As for the steering wheel, yes those worked off the bat and just interface with the canbus that comes with the unit - very straightforward, you just sync up the steering wheel controls through the touch screen settings.
Yes happy with it overall. Couple of things: 1.) The USB chargers that come with it do not charge iphones very fast. In fact, if youre using wireless carplay which require bluetooth/wifi to be on, it basically keeps my battery level/5-10% over an hour increase. Ive opted to charge directly from my car and omit the USB charging 2.) The wireless carplay is sometimes a little finicky in that I have to re-pair with it every once in a while. Ill have to forget device, etc. and re-pair because the carplay app will not connect automatically. This is probably a once a month occurrence. 3.) The graphics/screen on my maps will sometimes lag. What I mean by this is that my location arrow on google maps, for example, will stay still while Im still moving. I remedy this by switching my headlights on and off quickly to reset the day/night mode on the map. This fixes it. Some tiny quirks like that here and there but overall Im happy, and Im not sure if any other chinese unit/any other DIN unit is superior in terms of ease of installation, plug-n-play, and overall performance - by that I mean you could maybe get a fancier DIN unit thats far more expensive and complicated to hook up to possibly avoid these issues. But at the price-point and ease of installation of this unit, I think its worth dealing with these small annoyances.
Thanks for the reply. Just installed mine yesterday. When I initially wrote the message I haven't received the unit yet and it was not clear on the amzn item description that there is a resistor. Hence the question. Did have some hick ups though for me, they sent me the wrong high-end harness (with the can bus decoder) -- it has the wrong power receptacle. Did try to use the Low End Harness initially which did power up the unit but SWC app mapping was not working. After some back and forth emails with customer service (who I would say really good despite being I believe in Hongkong), I ended up purchasing the correct harness off amazon as well and they are refunding that purchase. Over all though, happy with the head unit and really great upgrade for the money. Have you find out how to Dim the display? Or is there an auto adjust for the display. Dang, was test driving it last night, way too bright .... that im still figuring out. For phone, Im using Carlink 2.0 that is already installed, works perfectly. I was just hoping that you can save and store more users for bluetooth (make it easier to switch). At the moment (or maybe I have not found the feature yet), you have to unlink current linked phone and scan for the new phone you want to link. Like 3 to 4 steps to get there. Other than that, every things good.
Yup this is a total remove and replace unit. So you lose the CD player. You also lose your AM band only FM is configured with it. So you would need an app such as iheart radio (free) or the like to access AM band.
