There's an electrically heated wire foam cutter that I've used on 2" foam. It might be the ticket for this.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to keep this in mind when I eventually take this project on myself.

I didn't have any tools of my own (Yay apartment living...), but I ended up using a bread knife from my kitchen. It ended up doing the job just fine

Yes, I bought the spare off the list in this thread.

I have been driving our new 2024 XLE on the weekends and trying to research the spare issues. Ours cam equipped with 19" Michelin and I am pleased with the ride so far. I'm trying to figure out did your solution include two boxes, left and right, of white or dark styrofoam to "cradle" the spare and be a sound deadener. Is it white styro or other? Will it take a full size tire? Would a compact spare be viable for the space? Thanks in advance.

It is two pieces of foam to "cradle" the spare. A full size tire will fit in the space, but will bulge out of the top, so you can use it in a pinch, but I would not plan on putting a full-size spare in there full-time. The compact spare fits in there perfectly.

This looks like the Modern Spare tire? How did you end up getting a bolt long enough to screw in + secure the tire?

It sure is. I had to get creative. Special ordered M8 bolt that I believe was 7” long. Used 2 M8 nuts and washers and was able to use OEM knob. Worked perfect!

Ooo perfect, do you have a link or the dimensions to what you bought? I also have a Modern Spare tire, and it's just sitting unsecured right now since the OEM bolt was too short.

I used the parts from the first post in this thread. The pictures of my installation are on pages 4 and 6.

Thanks for getting back to me, I need your original thread describing everything. I saved the thread but , boom, it was gone somewhere. I,am mainly interested in protecting whatever is exposed after a remove the foam inserts plus anchoring the tire so it does not fly around.

I don't know what to say. This is the only thread I've created on the topic. I've commented in some other threads that other people have made about spare tire solutions, but everything I've said in those is also in this one.

It would be a little helpful if you mention whether you have an AWD or not, but it doesn't matter all that much. The most useful parts to get are the black foam protector that lays on the floor and supports the tire(64778-47090 - Protector, Spare Wheel) and the bolt that holds the tire down(51931-10040 - Carrier, Spare Wheel, RH). But, again, just read this thread. All the answers you are looking for are in it(including pictures).

Thanks, I found the thread and you did a great job listing what is needed, a real service to 2023/24 Prius owners. I do not have AWD. Thanks again, our first Prius, a 2007, is still being passed around to my grandsons. We love the 2003, our third Prius. Thanks again

Very interesting thread. I currently have a 2021 Gen 4 Prius PHV and have a space saver which when I go on longer journeys I carry on top of the cargo deck. I'm thinking about getting a Gen 5 Prius PHEV (once they actually become available in the UK) and it seems that a space saver can't be fitted underneath the load deck on that model (Prime in the US) either so once again I'll need to have the space saver on top of the cargo deck. I realise that the space savers are different between Gen 4 and Gen 5, with Gen 4 the wheel has holes on a 100mm pitch circle diameter whereas for Gen 5 it's 114.3mm pcd, also the Gen 4 space saver is 125/70D17 whereas for Gen 5 it's 145/90D16.

I note that the Gen 5 PHEV (Prime) has the HV charger module on the left hand side of the metal floor pan, and a second electronics module on the right hand side if the solar roof option is fitted (however as that's not offered in the UK it won't be fitted). I wonder if in the absence of the solar roof module there'd be enough space to get in a space saver positioned a bit to the right of centre of the floor pan to avoid the HV charger module, albeit at the expense of a somewhat raised cargo level due to the thickness of the horizontal space saver? Maybe something to investigate if and when I do get a Gen 5 Prius PHEV (Prime).

Hello all, I hope you all are doing well! As a Dad new to the Prius automobiles, I'm finding sorting through the 15 pages of this great thread a bit intimidating, but wanting to learn!.....I was hoping @Hammersmith or someone else could comment on what I would need to add a spare tire to my college-bound daughter's Prius.

It is a 2016 Prius (regular Prius, not C or V) Four Touring model. I've attached a photo of the rear hatch area showing what I think is a well for a spare tire with a threaded bracket for fastening a spare tire.

Her Prius has 17 inch wheels, the main tire size is P215/45 R17 87V. (Sidenote: just ordered four new Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires from Costco, should be a nice upgrade, she's excited to try them!)

Back to the spare tire question.....her Toyota owner's manual states the spare tire size as T125/70D17 98M (spare).

So obviously I need the correct rim for that tire, and the tire. What about the mounting hardware that would fasten the spare wheel into the threaded bracket in the well? That would just be some kind of threaded rod with a handle for tightening that would go through some kind of metal plate that would clamp down on the rim?

Anybody happen to have a parts list for what I would need for the wheel/rim, tire and mounting hardware? Are there aftermarket solutions available, or is it best to just buy the "genuine Toyota" parts?

(She already has a scissor jack/lug nut wrench.....she inherited this Prius from her Grandfather (now deceased), he must have acquired those at some point.)

Thanks for any help/suggestions you can provide, much appreciated!

P.S. - When her Grandfather owned the car, I believe he had a full-size spare tire back there, I believe that's why you see the rub marks in the rubber-like material.....but I don't think he had the wheel fastened down. I'm wanting to add an OEM or OEM-like "mini-spare" setup, properly fastened down, etc. Thank you.

That looks good-2-go for a spare. Just need a tie down bolt. I would go to Toyota Parts Dept and ask them
