Hybrid battery or abs pump??

    Do I need a new hybrid battery, abs pump or both?Gen 2 with 172,000 miles I currently have the triangle, engine, abs lights on with battery fan consistently running. Took car to auto zone for diagnostic check and the codes are C1256,C1259,C1310. I was told auto zone does not have the correct software to pull the additional codes to correctly diagnose the issue so I decided to take it to Toyota paid the $200 and they came back with P0A1D and P3000 with bad cell #9. Why are the codes different from auto zone and Toyota? I went to both locations on the same day.

    Because the Toyota software can scan a little deeper and get better results some of these other scanners can't communicate completely so they're reading computers that are not getting a reading communicating improperly etc I would say the Toyota software reading would be the most accurate for your Toyota car. They're telling you the block or the module numbers that are bad you should also be able to see that in the Dr Prius app which is free You may or not know how to decipher all of it but people here will with a picture of the screenshot so there's always that It sounds like you have a hybrid battery that is failing and block nine lifting up the panels and opening the hood of the battery and lifting up on it a little bit while it's in place will allow you to see one strip of the business end of the battery when you note the frosted nuts and the discolored bus bars you can pretty much stop right there and have an idea that the battery needs to come out and some things need to happen.

    There are MANY different scantool devices available on the market, and most of them vary hugely as to their capabilities.

    Some might only retrieve codes and basic data from the engine computer (ecu) as per US government regulations - OBD2. Others might do some more, such as talking to ABS, or transmission ecu's.

    Still others can function closer to the dealer level scantools that can talk to all systems on that car, retrieve codes and all data, perform tests, command certain functions on or off, etc.

    That said, P3000 is set in the Hybrid Vehicle Control ecu, and usually means "the High Voltage battery ecu says it's got a problem, go over there and check it out". P0A1D is also set by the HVC ecu, it indicates a possible problem with the ecu itself (there are over 20 sub-codes or INF codes for this fault that can give more details).

    If there's a "HV battery block (#9) becomes weak" code, I would expect to see P3019 in the battery ecu.

    The brake system codes C1310 & C1259 will set when there's a fault in the hybrid drive system.
    C1256 points to low brake accumulator pressure - if the brake pump runs too often and-or too long, that can be a sign of a failing brake actuator assembly.

    Is the ABS pump whining & esp when turning off, making noises, after you PushButton Off?
    If not, Replace the 12V battery 1st. When it rates under 14v (yes 14) the ** thing throws ODD codes all (over) the place.
    THEN you may just have to replace the hybrid battery (which also can toss odd codes).
    If it's still the ABS, you have an ugly decision to make.
    There are plenty of youtube videos to hear what a dysfunctional pump sounds like...

    This is blatantly untrue.

    If you are going to make such statements, you need to state the source documentation (that does not include, "I read it on the internet!") on which you're basing the assertion.

    Thank you for the reply’s I bought a a battery from hybrid2go 3 months ago and when my triangle and other lights came on I called them they said they needed the code P0A80 and told me to go to auto zone because it was free. But the codes that were pulled from auto zone were C1256,C1259,C1310 and was not the battery so they were not going to replace it.i told them I was taking the car to Toyota and they said auto zone would be able to pull the same codes. I then went to Toyota the same day and the codes were P0A1D and P3000 with bad cell #9. I’m trying to figure out why hybrid2go would direct me to auto zone? Is Toyota correct? Why did Toyota not pull up auto zones codes? I’m just confused why auto zones codes did not show anything wrong with the hybrid battery

    They came out yesterday replaced the battery and no more lights. So does that mean nothing is wrong with the ABS pump like auto zones diagnostic says? Because it seems like if I wouldn't have gone to Toyota and paid $200 I would be sitting here wondering what’s going on with my car

    Yes, more than likely. AutoZone uses basic readers (which is why they did not pull a complete set of codes) and usually has students or young people with no real experience trying to interpret data from systems of which they have no real knowledge.

    Reiterating what others have said above, the DTC C1259 is set by the ECB ECU and the DTC C1310 is set by the VSC ECU. Neither code means any problem with the brake system at all: they both tell you about some problem elsewhere in the car (in the hybrid powertrain control) that the brake system just needs to know about (because those systems cooperate to do regeneration). So these codes just mean you need to get the codes that really matter, from the ECUs controlling the hybrid system.
    The cynic in me says they know the chances of AutoZone pulling the P0A80 would be low due to the basic readers most of them use.

    So they came to the party in the end. What prompted them to do that? Did you pass on the codes from Toyota?
    In all likelihood those codes AutoZone pulled were on the health check scan Toyota did. The difference is they knew they were secondary to the main codes and likely did not mention them because they knew the P0A1D, P3000, and P3019 were the significant ones to focus on.

    I did pass on the codes that Toyota provided to Hybrid2go. It’s a shame that they would refer someone like me and probably a lot of other people who have no clue to auto zone knowing that there’s a possibility the codes they pull are not enough to correctly diagnose the issue. They could have mentioned Dr. Prius maybe even that could have been more accurate, it seems? I appreciate all the responses!

    that is the biggest problem with reconditioned battery companies. they don't like to honor the warranty, and with every failure, they become less and less communicative.
    i'm glad they replaced it for you, and i hope they do next time as well. it isn't right that you had to pay for a correct diagnosis, that should be on them.

    Pulled up the “warranty” it says the the warranty is excluded if
    • any of the following codes are generated by a diagnostic test at the time of warranty request:
    C1256, C1391, P3190, P3191, P3193, POAOF, С2300.
    I had some of these codes from autozone that’s why they did not want to replace it. Even though it was still the hybrid battery.
    I should have never went with them. Oh well you live and learn.
