Hello, new forum member here. I have a 2014 Prius III that I want to build a bed frame for. I will have the front seats in the down position and then have a piece of plywood as the platform. I've seen some pictures of this before and I know a front support, behind the front seats, set in the back foot well needs to built. Has anyone done this and have advice and plans for it? I expect to utilize a light futon for when I want to make it a "sleeper" and remove that if I need to haul anything. I have a weird schedule that requires naps between jobs four nights a week. I've always just slept in the driver front seat but realize this would be so much better. Any advice greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!
keeping the rear seat in place? if not then see the below. ***video at the bottom*** https://black.jmyntrn.com/2021/03/27/rear-seat-replaced-with-a-platform/?utm_source=PriusChat&utm_medium=weblinkt&utm_campaign=commentlinkJune
@Solman636 has done it iirc. and others. check out the camping forum, although they aren't all in there.
Thank you for the response - really appreciate it. I won't be taking the seats out and I've seen examples on how to do this generally. Still this is helpful, so thank you. The third generation Prius has such an expansive area to the back of the front seats, it really is an incredibly useful vehicle to have. I used to have a Ford Ranger pickup(s) and while the 3rd Gen is no pickup and still has significant utility that it makes it such a great car to have. Thank you for your input.
This is what you dont realize yet... leaving the seat and going that route, over time the seat back begins to fold lower into the seat bottom. Eventually, you will not have the same level of sleeping area as you started with... but I think this is what you are referring to.. also.. stay away from wood! it breaks and can collect moisture from the are which then creates mold. Did you see how easy it is to remove the seat and all of the extra storage room you gain by removing the seat then replacing it with a light weight metal platform? Not sure what you mean by "front seat in the down position?" My approach is different than most. I take the head rest off the front seat, push the seat all the way FORWARD, then recline the seat back all the way BACK. When you do that, the front seat back will be level with the rear seat cushion. I then put a one drawer unit which opens out the door (although anything about one foot tall would work). The top of the drawer unit (or whatever box you wanted to use) is level with the folded rear seat. Plywood piece goes on top, creating a "bed" space of over 10 feet, from the glove box to the tailgate. Most people push the seat up, not back. My way gives MUCH more space for the bed. Plus the car stays 100% stock.
