I am looking for suggestions on the best "ways & means" to transport a 10 foot kayak on top of my 2007 Prius without having to modify the car. I have seen pictures of HSDs with car top carriers but looking at Yakima and Thule sites I get no recommendation from them for carriers that fit my Prius. I have seen foam blocks, but have concerns about safety and security using them. Suggestions?
I would take a look at this page for some tips. Darrell's done a great write-up. http://evnut.com/prius_racks.htm Welcome to PriusChat!
Look to the left of this message (the avatar photo), that's what I've been using. The system is pretty sweet, but for the price it should be... You definitely get a much, much, much better setup than the foam blocks, if you are willing to pay for it. Fortunately, there were plenty of great reports here confirming it was a very good choice. Details about that Yakima system I use are in the USER-GUIDE.

I just traded my 01 classic in on an 07 HSD and am an avid owner although I haven't taken my interest to the internet up until now. I have missed alot. I am curious as to how much your mpg was reduced with a kayak on top? Schnozz

I like the Saris although I am concerned about scratching the paint. I will check these carriers out further. Schnozz
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(schnozz @ Jan 2 2007, 07:30 PM) </div> 36.8 MPG on the highway without any aero-mods. One is a 12-footer and the other a 14-footer. This year, I'd like to get an air-deflector and find a way to seal the cockpits.

They reduce wind drag too. I would think an air deflector would create more drag. Kayaks are already aero-dynamic. Schnozz
I am a new 2007 Prius Pkg H owner...When I emailed a picture of my new pride n joy, my brother's response was Hey Super – it reminds me of the old fashioned VW Beetle Hatchbacks – I just would be careful driving on the Interstate and on rainy days!!!!!! I haven't formulated my response to this rather snotty and uneducated response to my new car purchase but would appreciate any help from any of you!
