Is Gen 5 Prius really better-looking than Gen 4 Prius Prime?

    The cars used to come in colors back in those days. Now, mostly shades of gray.

    My other favorite contemporary turquoise color is the BMW snapper-rocks blue metallic.

    This is a good side-by-side comparison of Gen 4 and Gen 5. Gen 5 certainly has contemporary looks—until Gen 6 arrives. I have warmed up to Gen 5's looks, but then I can care less about the looks one way or the other. As long as I have a newer, reliable, safe, efficient, and economical car and I don't have to spend a lot of money for it, I am OK.

    By chance, parked my white gen 5 next to a gen 4 last November in Guelph. Made for an interesting comparison! Never saw the other owner.

    Different-era designs, but both are looking good.

    It is interesting that the wind-chill pearl turns yellow so quickly, even under the gray skies of Canada. Now that I see it, perhaps I will avoid it.

    The colour on the older wind-chill pearl is so uniform, that I suspect that was the shade on that model. It seems they tweak the colours but keep the same name, like "guardian grey", no?

    Perhaps, who knows, but I would be surprised if they have changed it without changing the color code. I know they had a nonpremium yellowish white that was called arctic white in earlier generations.

    I traded my 4th gen prius prime to 5th gen and now I am regretting it :(
    Gen4 looked and felt much larger. The Gen5 trunk looks so much smaller and infinitely less practical (gen4 was shallow and wide, gen5 narrow and deep). Gen4 had presence on the road! Gen5 despite Ferrari-like design seems understated.
    And please for Heaven's sake tell me why did Gen5 remove "Charge for departure time" option in scheduling.
    I used it all the time, it was very useful. Now in Gen5 I have primitive start time and stop time for charging?!?!?
    How is it even useful without taking into consideration the current state of charge?

    Even my kids sitting on their booster seats commented how little head room they had comparatively to gen4 :( The driver side of the inside trunk and even outside gets kind of hot when charging.

    I think part of it is the usual buyer's remorse, which happens when you buy a house as well. If you liked your previous house a lot, when you buy and move to a new one, it could come as a dreadful shock. I think you will get used to it over time. Give it a few more months.

    Incidentally, I see quite a few low-mileage Gen 5 Priuses returned, but they are probably because the buyers mistook them for a Ferrari-like car.

    Did you use TSS 2.0 DRCC with LTA in your 2022? Do you use TSS 3.0 DRCC with LTA in your 2024? How does it compare if you do?

    What do you mean about presence on the road? I noticed in my test drive that Gen 5 had a vague on-center steering as opposed to the sharp on-center steering of Gen 4, but it also had quicker steering response. I don't know how I would like that vague on-center steering if I actually owned the car and kept driving it, but other than that, Gen 5 was easier to drive. Improved brake/accelerator modulation and reduced motive force at creeping speeds also helped when pulling out or in.

    Similar story applies, Gen 3 to 4 transition.

    I believe Gen 2 to 3 transition maintained trunk (aka hatch) volume and practicality, but no personal experience, just from what I haven’t read here.

    I tried TSS on my 2019 Prius prime, but it was half baked, it was not reacting if people were cutting you off, my foot was constantly hovering over brake pedal, it worked in the ideal conditions but you constantly had to supervise it, in other words it was too stressful and I disactivated everything except precollision braking which worked pretty good. LTA was not very useful unless you go in a straight line. TSS 3 is much more usable, LTA is much more refined now, it even slows down on curves -sometimes- but it is very much dependent on the quality of the road marking, if your lane marks disappear all of the sudden DRCC might not even slow down. So the problem is that you can not rely on it 100%. It is one of those things which are all or nothing, so i play with it in a very slow traffic or on open road with few cars, so for me it has very little value. With TSS 3 the take off is much smoother now, but braking still could be too abrupt sometimes, i worry about cars behind me, i other words even though TSS 3 is much improved it still lacks predictive power like a human driver would have. Also TSS3 is much more complicated, it always beeps and warns you about something with tiny messages on the screen nobody can possibly read while driving. I find Toyota did not really incorporated priority in their warnings and the system is not intuitive! You have to LEARN it! otherwise it is just a bunch of beeps.

    Now although the car is elegant it looks just like all other cars, i find it looks like my neighbor's KIA sedan and like corolla. It is not sufficiently different from other cars. My wife looses Gen5 on a busy parking lot ( she complains that "they look all the same now"). It has never happened with Gen4 :)

    Yes, they say that rear cargo volume of an SUV and a station wagon is the same on paper, but wagon has much better loading surface and therefore more practical. After having subaru outback I can attest to that. Gen4 prime has much wider loading surface than Gen5 prime and you can feel it right away in terms of practicality. Gen5 is basically a sport car now :( Who asked them to turn the practicality king Prius into something which is a whole bunch of compromises now?!?! :(

    On my 2019 prime i had a choice of either auto-lights or manual, Now it is only auto. I have 20 small overpasses on my way to work, and every single time it is on-off with no way to stop this craziness :( the sensor is way too sensitive, even if i adjust it for less sensitivity it is still too sensitive :(

    I also do not like how Gen5 rides on 19inch wheels. it is not as supple as Gen4 ride. Gen5 ride is fine if your roads are very good but if your roads are full of pot holes like mine, Gen5 can be harsh. Gen4 was a pleasure to drive. When we went on a 4hr trip with Gen4 we did not even get tired! Gen4 prime had a very nice ride.

    I think you assumptions are correct. I traded my prius prime Gen4 to Gen5 for better EV range and moon roof (which i like in cars for more light on those dreary winter mornings). Everything else, even the ride, is a downgrade on Gen5. Looks are subjective, i happened to like the Gen4 look. And the biggest reason i traded gen4 is that huge steel encased battery in the hatch. I constantly have two kids in the rear seat. And the battery located above their lower backs :( Guess where this battery goes in case of the rear end collision! Gen5 battery is under the floor. If you do not have passengers at the back it does not matter, but if you do, battery placement is something to consider.

    That is it! You nailed it! My thoughts exactly.

    This is exactly what i mean when i say that Gen5 has no presence on the road.


    Are you young? Because if you were as old as i am you would know that pictures on the dating sites always look better than reality :) Gen5 is no different :)

    As I said my wife regularly looses our 2024 prime on a busy parking lot. Never happened to her with Gen4 Prime.

    I have Guardian grey and it is true that it is too dark, it looks much lighter on promotional photos but in reality that color is too dark. Somebody in the neighborhood has silver an this color is even less impressive especially with a light coat of dust.

    One of the reasons i got gen5 it is because there are quite a few people who pee themselves with excitement over Gen5 and they SHALL keep the resale value high :) I might not be too happy about Gen5 looks but I am happy that there are people who will buy it from me at a premium :)

    This guy has only 16k subscribers, only 3.4K views on this video over 10 months. Not impressive. It is literally a BS review. I only watch AlexonAutos for general reviews and Car car nut for technical reviews. The rest like this guy is a waist of time. I really question his reviews and the value if the car reviews in general. I am 6'2 and barely have enough head room in Gen5. The problem is that toyota with it's Gen5 is tying to please Prius haters, i.e the people who do not buy priuses in the first place. Catering to haters and not to loyal customers could back fire.

    My dealer said that several people passed on Gen5 when their allocation came in. Gen5 will sell ok but it will not be out of the park hit like some people here saying.

    Yeah, 2019 had TSS-P. 2020 had the first refresh, which got the center rear seat. 2021 had another refresh and got TSS 2.0.

    TSS-P did not have LTA. It only had DRCC and LKA. TSS-2.0 added LTA; so, it follows the lane markings.

    Did your 2019 have BSM and RCTA? They are now standard. I have the 2021 Prius Limited, which also has the head-up display that disappeared in Gen 5.
