Hi I was hoping for some information regarding Toyota hybrids I am currently fairly close to purchasing a Gen 3 prius plus and seen dozens and dozens of forums regarding the dreaded rattle and the enivatable HG problems these cars suffer from. Does anyone know if the Auris hybrid suffers with the same issues as it basically shares the same engine components. However there seems to be almost no forums or threads relating to them. I have seen the occasional lexus CT threads and considering the Auris would of sold considerably more than the lexus I can't seem to see anyone who has had a failed Head Gasket Thanks in advance
If one car out of every 10,000 has a head gasket issue, I would not call that an 'inevitable' problem. I drive a 2011 Gen 3 with over 200k miles on it, and no head gasket issues.
If you look you notice these problems generally rear they're ugly head around 140 to 225,000 mi so in generally today people are changing their housewares and their cars like their underwear so a lot of people tend to be out of these cars by the time these problems get ready to start so their pawned off into the used market and all of that those people wind up with all the problem but then that's a used car that doesn't really count as a strike against Toyota in the grand scheme of things because the car lasted the original owner until they got out of it I'm just used to that got out of it being at 400,000 miles not 170 so that's quite a difference to me to Gen xers and people that just don't know have always been in Dad's car or whatever well they don't have any baseline to reference against so they're in good shape a guy like me on the other hand has been making $500,000 miles in Toyotas since the '70s dropping back to 190 or 170 well it was quite a big shock to me maybe not to others me personally I would probably skip over the generation 3 it'll be bad enough getting similar antics in a generation 4 and I can't wait to see what happens with the five I'll just watch from the sidelines $20,000 more money is not worth three to five miles to the gallon to be honest about it especially if the car is going to give up the ghost in under 200,000.
I don’t know for sure, but I think Europe got the water pump software update to mitigate the problem. So I’d have to say yes, it’s a problem
Thanks for replies, so are we saying the Auris does suffer from same issues. I think that prius gen 3 seems to be mostly USA based Was wondering if a Jap import one would fair any better
If it's the 2ZZ Atkinson cycle I don't guess I would really care where it came from You might get some nicer componentry in the JDM spec car and the steering wheel and an odd place but other than that I think everything pretty much that's the bread and butter of the car stays the same That's not how it used to be but that's how it is now The only reason I'm buying a JDM spec engine is because they're plentiful and when I ordered they were reasonably inexpensive now the pandemic has pushed all this stuff above $2,000 so well I just don't fix those cars at least not with my money.
I've got a pretty 2013 Persona in the black cherry with the black soft tech interior had a new engine transmission all LEDs cute little car it rivals every so often nobody can figure out what it is so it just sits I'm not going to drive something and let it rattle itself to death even if it only does it ever so often that's just not how I roll anything I drive has to be able to be entered and drive to California if I need to without question get my ditty bag and I'm off that 2013 Persona will not do that therefore it cannot serve here.
Kind of doesn't really explain why the majority of forums on failed gaskets on Gen 3 s are in USA unless its a numbers game But as asked previously cant seem to find any on the Auris unless no many in USA own them.
I was looking at a jap import around 2013 and mileage would be somewhere between 50k to 70k. Miles not km
Would hope that would be the case, don't want to opt for second choice Auris and have same risks as Prius and no one can give a definitive answer if the risks are the same, unfortunately
all cars have risks. used cars more especially. if you don't hang around repair chat rooms, you sleep better
It has the same risks but your car might have lower miles. If the miles are correct (it’s easy to change) then you should have another 70-80k miles without major issues except for the hybrid battery which is age and mileage dependent. I would not finance it with high interest for over two years.
keep in mind that we have never gotten auris here, and car importing is a very unusual activity with so many brands and models available.
