patches are hit and miss at best. on my 04, it picked up a nail and i ended up getting it patched 3 times before it worked. my brother was a service manager for a tire store and failed patches are very common. most places fix them for free. i took mine to Les Schwabs and they didnt charge me anything
maybe it was a crap patch job, but why not just have someone else redo the patch if it's suspect? ten bucks, if that, should do the trick. hubby patched a tire less than a month after we got the car because i picked up a nail somewhere, still no problems after almost 2 years. edit: oh yes, and please do yourself a favor and be more aware of what is being done to your car. in the long run it will be worth it, we have some friends who did the same thing and just had a massive brake failure in their corolla. they were shocked to find out it needed lots of other work too when DH looked it over.
just to add on a bit, I will guarantee the dealer did not do an outside plug on your tire. those are incredibly unsafe and no shop will ever do one. They probably did a plug patch (from the inside), and did a horrible job. Inside plug patches are very common and are the "recommended" way to patch a tire. and to whoever said a normal patch usually will not work and fail, if your patches are failing whoever is doing them is doing them wrong. While every now and then, yes a patch will fail, at my shop its usually only 1/20 that we have an issue with while the others last for the rest of the tires life.

Airing up the tires won't cause a correctly patched tire to leak, Sherlock.
Thanks Pinto Girl!!! Are you a damsel in shining armor??? I just bought a can of "Fix-a-Flat" and refilled my tire. All seems OK now. Time will tell. I would have bought a couple of new tires today, but I haven't found a model I like with a low Low Rolling Resistance (LRR) in my size yet. I just hope I have bought myself some time to continue my research.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pinto Girl @ Jan 2 2007, 02:30 PM) </div> Watson, We're talking about a Prius not a Pinto. Watson, learn from Sherlock and realize that the max pressure on the tire is 44psi. AND Watson, the tire has a max pressure of 44psi, this is the MAX pressure after taking into account heat build up and weather. The recommended tire pressure is less. So someone who puts 45psi cold and lets say a conservative 2 psi increase with driving heat build up in the tires so at 47psi shouldn't expect a patch to leak... your at 10psi over the recommended... and also above the max pressure. So let's say they did an average job of the patch, the pressure probably made it leak. If they did a great job maybe it won't leak. EITHER way, here's a novel solution, just pay the $10 to repatch the tire, problem solved. Okay, don't have the $10 you say but you have the time to complain to a service department with no proof that they did anything wrong. Well below are the phone numbers and addresses to all the Discount Tire Co's in Sand Diego for you. They will redo the patch for FREE. You are incorrect. The max pressure is taken COLD. Try it again; the list of tire stores failed to impress.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(moolman @ Jan 2 2007, 06:32 PM) </div> Bzzzzt! Wrong Answer The Sidewall Rating is the COLD inflation max. It allows plenty of room for heat expansion from driving, as long as you stay under the speed rating of the tire. (That is part of why tires are speed rated, because pressures get higher as they get hotter and they get hotter when they go faster). You are partially correct that if you fill the tire at 0 degrees and the next day it's 90 degrees you would be over the max, which is why everyone is advised to check their tire pressure regularly as weather changes. It's just as true that filling at 90 degrees and then starting out the next morning at 0 degrees would leave you under-inflated, which is a MUCH more dangerous option. Also, even if you like to run at the manufacturers soft inflation, remember to up your tire pressure if you are going to be carrying a heavy load. Remember the Load Rating on the Sidewall is only achieved at Max Inflation Pressure. At lower pressures, the Load Rating is lower. (Unless the tire specifies a Load#PSI rating, which some do)
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Pinto Girl @ Jan 2 2007, 03:59 PM) </div> If the recommended pressure is in the 30's and you go over it, do you have a complaint against anyone if something bad happens. No just blame yourself. Yeah, you're right, I'm sure the running the tire pressures at whatever you want if fine. 50psi, 60psi.. whatever it's all the same.... After all the maintenance schedule for the car are recommendations. If you have a bad tire patch and don't know who did it. Do you have a confrontation with the dealer about it because you think they did it. The amazing thing is that all this can be solved with a quick trip to Discount tire and have them repatch the tire. Done. Because if you find a Tire patch at a lower price, your Tire patch is FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, or is that for a mattress. Sherlock

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(moolman @ Jan 2 2007, 07:15 PM) </div> Wrong Again. The tire is rated by the tire manufacturer. The Auto manufacturer sets their recommended inflation as much for comfort as load rating. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(moolman @ Jan 2 2007, 07:15 PM) </div> No one is saying that. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(moolman @ Jan 2 2007, 07:15 PM) </div> There you go; that's the spirit. This was WAAAAAAY too easy. May I sell you a 200mpg carb for your Prius? Oh, this is a four barrel, and the Prius only has a two barrel...
Toyota has 3 criteria for tires: Cheap, round, and black. Two of these are negotiable. Toyota is not interested in building the best car possible, but the best car for the price. Who do you think knows more about the tire, Goodyear or Toyota? Toyota's lawyers probably carry as much weight as the engineers when it comes to writing specs. If you want to run the tire soft, be my guest. When you replace them at 30,000 miles remember to just blame yourself and be sure to replace them with Goodyear Integrities because that is what Toyota uses (and sells). If you run them harder within Goodyear's spec the tread should last longer. I don't recall anyone in this thread recommending pressures over Goodyear's specs. BTW I run 42/40 on the Prius and 40/40 on the Intrigue and haven't had a tire blow.
I'm not arguing that you can't run the tires at a high pressure than what toyota states. I run my tires at 40/38 myself but if something happens such as a tire blow out, no matter how unlikely, I won't go running to my dealer or toyota to complain. It's all on me. Same thing with the tire patch, which is what I was saying all along. Just repatch the tires at any discount tire for free. You have no complaint against the dealer for supposedly doing something. But in the end why even go through the hassle of complaining when a redo of the tire patch which is free would solve the problem, especially when you were already at the discount tire place, that told you that the tire patch was the problem. I guess the reason I was rude in the beginning was because let's face it, the tire patch is a stupid problem that can be fixed for free in about 10 minutes

I will never buy an iPod. Many of my family and friends have them and I don't need one. CD's are fine, and cheap. I have over 80G of MP3's and "they just don't make enough good music any more." I have not even heard all of it. So you can defend your Apple product if you like. I prefer the usb thumb drive that I use that holds 3 gig of MP3's and has a CF Card slot, with 20 FM and 20 AM pre-sets, and voice recording for less than $125. And I don't have to buy anything off of iTunes, And when I get music, I can do ANYTH ING I want with it. Including rip it at 320bps. -J <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(moolman @ Jan 2 2007, 07:15 PM) </div> See Above. I used a can of fix-a-flat.
