I just want a BEV with Toyota quality.The recall isn't too concerning and I'm not sure there's tire issues as the Prius Prime is close in weight to my mom's 2006 Camry.

What are the Gen 5 tire issues?

 

I think there are 2 tire issues:
1) No spare
2)The low inventory of replacement tires. (at least for those versions with 19"rims). Since those tires are only specced for the Prius and no there car models, it's quite likely that they won't be in inventory when you need to replace them. It's kind of like needing an odd shoe size.

 

Meh, it's hardly a problem for me. Gen 4 Prius Prime doesn't have a spare tire either, and I'm sure that the Toyota dealers have the OEM tires for Gen 5 in stock.

I would love a toyota general build quality EV but lets be real here: the BZ4X is not a good car. For their first outing on full EV it's kind of a flop in terms of its overall cost/range/charge speed/value for money.

I think, as a first outing the BZ4X/RZ/Subaru Solterra (all have the same bones), is a good effort but its not worth it at MSRP. At a heavy discount it could well be worth picking up if someone wants a Rav4 sized EV and doesn't need to do anything with it that would require a faster charge speed.

The biggest hurdle for the darn thing is that its range isn't hyper attractive compared to other offerings *and* its got terrible charge speed which means it can't be a single car family's vehicle if they live somewhere they need to do longer drives... ever. I am probably not alone in thinking that if I'm paying XX,XXX$ and quite possibly have a monthly payment in the many hundreds of dollars a month - that I don't want to rent a car for trips unless I need more *seats*. Renting a truck or a panel van to haul a lot of stuff is one thing but not for a road trip or long drive.

I get toyota probably wants very long lasting batteries, so doesn't want to run 15 minute supercharger level fast DCFC charges. But surely they can engineer something better than a BZ4X.

I for one, fully expect the prius lineup to shift to full electric in the future. Over time the niche the prius fills in their lineup is increasingly getting smaller and smaller. But the historic brand value of the moniker, alongside corolla/camry/rav4 cannot be denied, and I doubt they want to drop it. Its not like a Venza, Matrix, Crown, Avalon - all names that have come and gone in the last 20 years.

I too want a BEV toyota, but I want a good one. It doesn't need to do road trips, but it does need to make for a better value proposition than the BZ4X. And with a better name. BZ4X today, honestly, just feels like it's a pilot project to be iterated on more effectively in the future.

If there was even a remote chance of my apartment complex getting charging stations, I would possibly hold off. We can’t even get them to do basic repairs so there’s no chance of that.

Entirely possible that they are starting to show up here since stock is piling up elsewhere? They had an Ontario plate so they weren't just visiting.

 

19 inch low profile not good for pot hole roads I’m surrounded by and super low inventory. I’m on a FB page and see the nightmare situations. Obviously not happening to everyone.

The SE prime has 17 inch tires, and I think the base prius is the same. I personally don't see the value of the higher trims for the price difference myself. Not unless you're going top top trim of the prime because it has cool stuff like 360 view camera for parallel parking and backing up, with the added bonus of nicer speakers.

But if you have poorly maintained roads near you, I wouldn't want to spend more money on new tires and rims to find a comparable smaller size with bigger sidewall for (in my case) winter *and* summer tires.

I think the tire issue is probably overblown and moreso a reflection of it being an uncommon OEM sizing but supply and availability should improve over time. Especially if gen 6 in the future uses the same tire size.

Haven't had an issue with pot holes (I avoid them). I did briefly consider a chevy bolt (not the cross over) but they were also unobtainable and then discontinued after I got the Prius. Most of my driving is under 50km or 100km depending on which town I'm going to for shopping, and most of my "trips" are about 200-300km away so a 400-500km range would be perfect.

 

Sadly importing a new car from the US to Canada is rather difficult as Toyota won't sign the compliance papers.

 

My co-worker got a Chevy Bolt and I went out and drove it around....zippy little car. It is very little and reminded me of the old Scions, especially that suspension...you can feel every little bump on the road. Fit and finish was nothing great, typically Chevy quality. She did get a very nice tax credit for it so is happy about that.
She did get a flat and while it's supposed to have run-flats, it does not and no spare tire...flat wasn't repairable so a new tire wasn't cheap. She has another gasoline car for longer journeys, EVs really aren't made for cross-country treks, for sure.
Overall she's pretty happy with it and glad she doesn't have to worry about a lot of maintenance costs like oil changes and transmission fluid.

 

Agree, but the bZ4X was not Toyota's first BEV. There was a UX 300e they sold in China, Europe, and possibly some other markets. It received the same criticism as the bZ4X; EV and charge performance was lacking for the asking price.

 

what year did she get? they had made some improvements and my '23 has a very comfortable ride, a rommier than the prius except for thr hatch depth. i have to put the rear seats down to carry large items.
the self sealing tyres are no panacea, and will only seal small punctures.
