It was down to 38 mpg and the gasket blew. I had cleaned the egr cooler to Mendel’s specifications even though the Car Care Nut said it was a waste of time. The guy with the most views was right.

Maybe the mods could add this question to the initial post:

At what miles did you clean the EGR?

And maybe fix the thread title, “mpg” should be “miles” I think.

You waited too long to clean the cooler. The damage was already done.

Do all toyota hybrids that share this engine suffer HG problems. Such as the Auris

Cleaned the EGR at 110K miles. Still going and I'm not driving it all that much these days. It'll probably be quite a while before I need to do anything else with it.

2012 Prius 3, currently 166k mi. Bought used with 140k mi. Wasnt aware of Prius historic issues until I started having them and did my research. Didnt realize engine was consuming oil until low oil warning light went off on a sharp turn. Started topping off about a quart every 1k mi. Had accumulator/ABS module fail. Replaced it myself. As soon as it was back on the road, blown head gasket symptoms popped up. I am currently in the process of changing out the head gasket. Lapped the valves. While I have it apart, I am doing a piston soak and installing an oil catch can. Full egr system, throttle body and intake manifold cleaning. New spark plus and coil packs.I should be done with it by the end of this week. I will post my results.

Head gasket is fine. First cleaning of EGR cooler and intake manifold a few days ago at 133k miles. Not very clogged.

I don't have a good estimate, I would around 50k miles EV. This was my father's car prior, and he put 85k miles on it, with over half of it in EV since he was able to charge it at work. Ever since he gave this car to me, I put on 53k miles, and I do not use the plug-in.

I was surprised at how little carbon build-up there was, I didn't take pictures of the cooler or valve though. I only have one of the pipe. The carbon wasn't baked on too badly, roughly ~30 minute soak in oven cleaner got most of the carbon out and EGR cooler pretty clean. It was coated in a layer that was not too thick. It was the same with the intake manifold. To me, it all seemed like it didn't need an immediate cleaning.

The PCV seemed good, I was shaking it and can hear a pretty springy click. I still replaced it. There was oil in the bottom of the intake manifold, I would say around 15 mL.

    edit: grammar

Good time to clean: 133-50=83 (thousand miles). Keep in mind, the radiator fins in the cooler are there for a purpose, and any significant coating is not just reducing flow; it’s reducing cooling ability as well.

An oil catch can will help with the intake manifold sludge. That’s the stuff that didn’t just breeze right through.
