The system automatically lowers the volume when the GPS talks etc... I have found when the safety warning ding the sound is reduced. The problem is, it doesn't go back up. My best fix is to lower off and on the system. Cycling though the different sources also usually works. Anyone care to state an easier work around to get the volume back up?

Also, connected with this glitch is the silencing of Waze occasionally. The music lowers, but no voice. Toggling the gps volume on off does nothing. Haven't found a solution rather than shutting the whole car off and back on again.

I ran into this kind of issue on a recent trip and my solution was to activate the car's voice assistant by pressing the button on the steering wheel (but not holding down, which activates your phone's assistant) then say something like "cancel" which I assume isn't actually a voice command to make it do nothing. The audio state will be restored to normal after the car stops listening for the voice prompt.

And to be clear, what I was experiencing was definitely a bug that only occurs when one of the car's warning alerts sounds at the same time that a connected android auto phone is playing navigation instructions. I wish I knew who to report this kind of thing to because it's easily reproducible and is highly disruptive when it occurs if you don't know the workaround.

@radsaq Haha I did the same thing. I press on the "voice" button on the steering and then cancel.
It is a bug - but it is a difficult bug to eliminate; also my friends who use Car Play do not have this issue.

If I ask "Google" to play the same source of audio by holding the button down, I found that the audio will be restored to its normal lever. However, the GPS using Waze no longer plays volume. So every time this should be an announcement via Waze it's just reducing the volume and not inputting the directions!

I'm going to try the quick tap and cancel I suggested.

I tried to look up the audio architecture of Android Auto and was unable to verify how it works. However, I assume that this is an indication that separate navigation and music audio streams are the phone, and the car is thus allowed to mix and route them however it likes and in this case it is totally muting the one audio stream. (AA uses wifi direct and not bluetooth when it's used wirelessly, so there's plenty of bandwidth for multiple streams.)

It would be interesting if an Apple user could chime in and indicate whether the same bug happens with CarPlay.
