What 12V battery would you recommend? Additionally, is there anywhere else I can hookup the leads?

Walmart sells them. I never had them put one in, so don’t know if they charge or not for it. I usually put in myself.

Im pretty sure those batteries are NOT 7 years old yet.

The Gen4 Prius uses a flood lead acid battery vented to the atmosphere, because its under the hood next to the engine (no need to avoid H2 gasses there. Should be a fairly inexpensice batery.

 

I had a 3rd Gen Prius that happened to be a plug-in, but I doubt it makes a difference. My 12V battery failed after about 5 years, so I went for a 3rd party battery from a reputable source, called NAPA. It was smaller than a regular 12V, and it cost a lot more. I had to pay over $400 for it at the time. The reason I was given is because it was AGM. I had a shop measure the parasitic drain, and they said it was about 50 mA. In retrospect, I probably didn't need to replace the battery, I just needed a battery maintainer. As it was, if I didn't drive it within about 7-10 days, I had a dead battery. After I installed the battery maintainer, I never had another problem.

You can get one from Toyota if you wish(part number 00544-H4052-470), but you can also get one at many local autoparts stores, including Walmart or Costco.

Your car came with a standard lead-acid(flooded) battery, so don't feel like you have to spend extra money for AGM batteries. Previous versions of the Prius(gen2 & gen3 - up through 2015) used AGM, but the gen4 and gen5(2016 onward) went back to standard lead acid.

 

It makes no difference in price whether it is centrally vented or not. Moreover, most if not all sold at the EN LN1/BCI 140R/DIN H4 size are centrally vented.

 

Get the Walmart EverStart Maxx BCI 140R (preferred) or DIN H4 (if BCI 140R not available). They are both equivalent sizes to EN LN1. They will work in Gen 5, too, as long as they are centrally vented. The recently introduced EverStart Maxx BCI 140R is centrally vented for sure. The newer versions of EverStart Maxx DIN H4 might be centrally vented, too.

It's not a "trickle charger," It's a battery maintainer. It monitors battery voltage, and applies a top-up charge as needed.

It's a 7 year old battery and it doesn't look like the electrolyte levels has ever been topped off. In this case, a battery maintainer isn't going to help much - since the battery probably needs to be replaced.

@Joe Wall, that jump pack in your picture should be able to get you by until you get a chance to replace that battery. The battery is nothing special so Walmart or any auto parts store should have what you need. Where you hooked up the leads, in your picture, is fine - though old school mechanics would beg to differ.....

I believe the Gen 3 uses an AGM battery, which does not have refillable flooded cells. If it has degraded to the point where it won't take a charge, it should be replaced.

 

It's a 2017 gen4 Prius, battery under the hood, in the engine bay. Standard flooded lead acid battery, with accessible electrolyte ports - check his pictures.

 

Just an idea here, but sulfate crystals can build up between the plates and short the battery. Sometimes, the high amperage of a boost can burn out the short, and temporarily restore the battery for a time.

 

It says he owns a 2009 Prius, which I believe is a Gen 3.
