Your taking a big risk not putting the plate number on the application YodaddyAlex, it is VERY likely that the DMV will send it back (along with your check).

Initially the DMV allowed this, but they started rejecting applications a while ago without plate numbers and there have been lots of posts on other forums regarding this happening. On the DMV site itself (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/decal.htm) in red lettering, it says that, "The vehicle must have a permanent license plate assigned before a sticker can be issued."

I'm not trying to dissuade you from applying YodaddyAlex...but I think it would be really unfortunate if you applied, had to wait a month, then the DMV just ends up rejecting the application and maybe miss the chance to get the stickers because they run out.

Are you not able to get plate numbers from your dealer? You should be able to get them from your dealer fairly quickly.

How are people receiving their plates merely a week after their car purchase?

They don't need the physical license plates, just the number that will be going on those plates. Dealerships can access the DMV database and obtain for the new car owner the number assigned to their plates. This takes a couple of days after submitting the paperwork to the DMV. That, along with paperwork the dealer needs to process for the purchase, can add up to a week's time.

Bought my Prius on 11/25 - Paid the $15 for expidited registration in order to get my plates asap. Got them in the mail on December 7th. Sent the application in duplicate that day. They cashed my check on 12/21.

They are supposed to start sending them out at the first of the year. I can't wait!

Mixed reports on this. I waited until I was assigned a plate number before sending in the application, and the check was cashed a few days ago.

Hint to those of you waiting for your plates -- if you CALL DMV or the DMV department at your car dealer, they can tell you the plate assigned to you before you receive it in the mail.

Hint to those of you who sent in your application without the plate number -- waste the $8 and send it in again with the plate number. It's definitely worth the waste of $8.

My crude calculations based on data from DMV 2 weeks ago suggest that the 2007 10000 stickers will run out for new applications received sometime in January +/- a couple of weeks.

The questions that I don't know the answers to are:

    1. Does "cashing the check" mean you get the stickers. (I _think_ so, but not sure)
    2. Will they mail all of the backlog during the first week of January, or will they trickle out...

I suppose I'll be calling DMV in a week and asking them agan...

    Hi Everybody,

My first post... I mailed in my application November 27 after buying the car on the 25th. I did not have the plate number, and the dealership provided the paperwork. It seems that the DMV website has 2 places to download the fom; One with instructions requiring the license plate number, and one without.

The bad news: I have never received a letter from them.
The good news: They deposited the check on 12/19/06. I have temporary plates now and am still waiting on my permanent ones (special interest/vanity).

The really really good news though is that I looked at the check online, and on the back where the DMV stamped their deposit information, somebody hand wrote my temporary license plate number... The number I didn't have when I submitted the application. :D

    Good luck everybody, ;)

If you can find those two links please post them. They would be very helpful to people. I have not heard of the instructions for those who do not have the plate number, and my verbal interactions with the DMV people who specifically seem assigned to this task indicate that you need the plate number.

Sure thing... Dealership gave me the actual form, as well as a letter with the following link:
    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/forms/reg/reg1000.htm
You can get to that site also by going to the main DMV site, going to the site map, and clicking on clean air stickers.

Then, when I read about the whole license plate requirement on here, I found that if you click on the Vehicle Registration button, and go to Alternative Fuel Vehicles, and then click on the first link, you get to:
    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/decal.htm

Obviously, the DMV should have both links go to the same page... Would leave less people wondering if they're going to get the stickers.

    Good question(s)!

One would think that the DMV processing would include cashing the check, assigning a sticker, AND getting it ready to be sent so that when Jan07 rolls around they could just do a mass mailing. But I guess we can only hope that a bureaucratic government agency will act unbureaucratically... <_<

    EDIT:
I just talked to a lady at the Sac. DMV, she couldn't give any definitive answer regarding how the stickers are going to be sent out (en masse or progressively), but she did say that if the check had been cashed, it was a good indicator that the stickers will be arriving within a couple of weeks.

Sent in my application (together with my proof of FASTRAK purchase) in mid-November. Nothing happened like forever. Then the cheque for $8 cleared on December 28 ... and less than a week latter, I got my stickers today (January 3) !

The number on the sticker is 0852XX. Not sure it means anything since it exceeds 85,000 (75,000+10,000).

    Got mine today : #85,7xx

There can't be many left since mine is >700 over the supposed limit... the overage is due to replacement stickers being issued i suppose, but how many of those can there be?

Sure appears from this board that sticker #s went up into the 81,000 range prior to the cutoff and people having to wait til after the new year. Extrapolating that out would result in the additional 10,000 taking the # up to at least 91,000 plus any replacement sticker applications that have come.

    Rec'd mine on 1/3 84,39*

...but both of those links indicate that you need to have a plate assigned. Well, the first one is just the application form, which _implies_ that you need to fill in the plate number...

A week??! I had my physical plates on the car 10 hours after purchase. Some dealers have full DMV facilities INSIDE their dealerships, including stocks of physical plates that they can issue. Fremont Toyota is where I bought mine, and they're one of the dealerships with this facility. When your transaction is done, they walk you over to their DMV person who logs on to DMV computers, does the work, then reaches into a cabinet and hands you the plates while you stand there.

I had my application in for clean air stickers, with plate number, registration, registration month and year stickers, and the physical plate on my car, just hours after purchase.

I get the sense offering this "full DMV" facility rather than "mini-DMV or DMV runner" service is much more expensive for the dealership, but it made it much easier for me. Probably moot at this late point for buyers, but definitely worth asking around to see which dealers have this in your area.

Kudos to Fremont Toyota for making that happen for me. (AND for selling me the prius at $1700 below MSRP, a very fair price.)

I'd have been very nervous about waiting a week or longer for plates given how few stickers are left...
