Parts compatibility for 2012 Prius

    I’ve two Prii-
    1 X 2016 Prius
    1 X 2012 Prius

    The 2016 was involved in a wreck last August and I’ve been driving it without any engine lights or troubles every day since then it just looked ugly. The insurance company finally processed my claim and the shop I took it to, along with the insurance company, deemed it a total-loss even though I was just driving it, just fine.
    My 2012 Prius has been out of commission since the gasoline engine threw a rod from the inside out (because it was misfiring on two pistons) and I was wondering, if I were to replace that engine, could I:
    1)Take off the rims and tires and put them on the 2016 Prius and put my premium wheels and tires on the 2012?
    2)Take the “healthy” individual battery cells from the 2016 and put them in the 2012?
    3)Possibly take the whole hybrid battery tray from the 2016 to install in the 2012?
    4)Take the brand new battery I just bought for 2016 and put it on the ‘12?

    any help/advice would be appreciated.

    being different generations, most parts won't be swappable.
    how much are they offering you for the 16? it might be worth buying it back from them.

    Unfortunately they are not offering me enough to cover what I owe on it but I did purchase gap insurance when I purchased the vehicle so at least I won’t owe on it. I have spoken with the insurance company and the lien holder in regards to a buy-back price and my lien holder refused to provide one but the insurance company ballparked it at $4k (which I don’t have)

    Pretty sure the battery modules will fit, there are threads here.
    Not sure about the 12v, but you can measure it.
    Wheels? Possibly, again, there are threads.
    Someone is going to make a lot of money on the gen 4.
    How will you justify the parts swap to the insco?

    I'd tack on one more "because":

    "because the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system, and intake manifold (has EGR passages), was never cleaned, was clogged up with carbon, causing overheating, head gasket failure, and allowing (uncompressible) coolant to leak past the head gasket into cylinder(s)"

    Were the "two cylinders" one and two? (that's the usual, the head gasket tends to fail between those two cylinders)
    What's the miles on it?
    Was the EGR ever cleaned?

    Pictures of the 2016 damage? Very frustrating, for a drivable vehicle to be totalled.

    It was on 2 and 4. Miles were approx 95,000 and I am not certain about the EGR status. I had paid cash for that one from a small car lot locally and the carfax came out clean however I drove it for 2 months and it drove like a dream apart from the check engine light coming on twice (I used a code reader both times and it said it was low on coolant but it wasn’t and the light went off immediately). Then one day, without the check engine light even on, it blew. The dealer I bought it from said it must be my poor driving lol. What an nice person. Anyway - I looked up the VIN on Toyota’s website and lucky me, the car had only ever been serviced by the Toyota dealership and had only one owner prior to the dealer I got it from. I don’t know why it wasn’t on the carfax but that dealership’s service log indicated that it was misfiring on the 2nd and 4th pistons and the former owner decided to just trade it in and I’m assuming the dealership, instead of repairing it (because the engine light would quickly go off), decided to auction it.

    I do not have pictures of the 2016 damage but yes, very drivable vehicle.

    As you said yourself, the insurance company is going to make a lot of money on the gen 4 and they already told me they weren’t going to pay more for my premium tires and wheels they just need it to be towable.
