Most amazingly, it's the same Toyota that was almost kicked off Earth for dragging their feet on BEVs.

The big news was already known; going hybrid only. The improvements are in line with what was seen in the gen5 Prius. Boost in performance with little to no change fuel economy. The Camry paid for the old engine to new dynamic force one in the last generation. The Prius price is reflecting a bigger change to its drive train. I suspect they are giving up some profit this year with the move to hybrid only. Like how the initial Rav4 hybrid pricing went.

Another interesting point. It got bigger. No interior figures posted, but the exterior is approaching the Accord. If it reaches large size, then it will be bigger than the Avalon and Crown US sedan.

There is some decontenting from the outgoing hybrid. SKS is an option on the LE and no heated seats for the base trim. The 16" wheels on the LE are now alloy, at least it won't look cheap in comparison.

Toyota likely expects to make up the price reduction in AWD sales. They are actually charging a little more than they did for the mechanical system in the ICE.Guess they'll do the same as the Prius in shipping AWD only to some markets.

The current LE has 16" steel wheels from the ICE L model. I felt it was a cheap maneuver for the segment, but it got the EPA over 50mpg.

they gave me a base rav4. not a bad car, but not even close to the camry. it did return 45mpg on the screen for the 20 mile return drive though.

If you bought a house in calif 30 years ago its paid off and you get prop 13 property taxes. You don't need much money to live now. Don’t complain the price of tv dinners is too much. 40 years ago is better. But then you are old.

Adjust for inflation, and your Camry and that Mustang were both over $30k.

In practice that means less stops at a gas station for daily use. While a BEV means never having to visit a gas station ever again.

I remember buying the first model year camry hybrid in 2006. It delivered 40MPG and treated us well for 10 years and 200k miles. One of the reasons we went with Priuses after that was the much better gas mileage. Glad to see they're closing that gap. If they added a PHEV version to sit between the Prius Prime and RAV4 Prime I'd be all over that.

 

A Plug in Camry would make an outstanding model even better - if that's possible.

A Plug in Corolla would be a knock out too.

Between the Camry, Corolla and Prius all averaging over 50 mpg it would be hard to go wrong picking an efficient vehicle.

Three great vehicles - three world class mpg performers - all priced for the average consumer!

 

Note the "daily use." The majority aren't driving hundreds of miles in a day. New Prius owners in the past here didn't talk about the distance they went on a tank, but about how they could go more days between having to stop at the gas station. The Prime owners are talking about it now.

Most people getting a BEV can charge at home. Would you have bought a PHEV if you couldn't have done so? How much longer between visits to the station does the Niro go than the Prius did?

I drive five to six thousand miles each year that would require refueling along the way. The other 13,000 miles of driving I do a year can be covered by a BEV charged at home. That would mean not having to take time to stop at a gas station 25 to 50 times a year. And I have seen 700 miles on my Outback's DTE gauge, yet have never driven over 300 miles in a single session.
