Would you buy a 2016 Prius two with 210,000 Miles on it?

Any car that’s nearly a decade old with over 200k miles on it is a huge roll of the dice. At that point, it is impossible to make any blanket assumptions…totally comes down to the individual car, how well it was cared for over those miles. You’re pretty much putting your money on red and spinning the wheel. You might get lucky, you might not.

At 200k miles, any issue could be on the table. Even the best car wears out over time. Suspension components, wheel bearings, engine mounts, steering joints, etc. Every component on a 200k mile car is getting close to the end of its design life. Can many components exceed that? Sure. Possibly. But pretty much every system on a car with 200k on it might die tomorrow or go another 5 years. Every bushing, ball joint, tie rod end, bearing, power window motor, brake booster, control module, etc has 200k miles on it.

To have any kind of accurate assessment of a 200k car, you’d really need to go through it with a fine tooth comb and look at everything, and take a hard look at maintenance records.


Largely comes down to your risk tolerance. It’s a big unknown. The biggest unknowns on a 2016 would probably be, in no particular order, the catalytic converter assembly (prone to coolant leaks to some extent), the hybrid inverter, the hybrid battery, water pump, head gasket, wheel bearings. Some of these things are pricey to fix. Priuses are generally quite reliable, but a number of expensive subsystems are getting old on the car you’re looking at.

 

i wouldn't, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. while some prius reach very high mileage, that doesn't mean they were without expensive repairs.

what type of driving do you need it for, and about howmany years and miles do you want to keep it for?

 

1. only if the car is cheap enough <$4K and is pristine inside and out
2. If your a mechanic and enjoy wrenching on cars (Prius) on your days off.
3. You can accurately account for all maintenance done to this point.

With that high mileage, the battery pack should be in fairly decent shape. You'll have to check and clean out the traction battery cooling fan system. That's not in the manual and have probably never been done. The 2016 exhaust gas heat exchangers fails fairly often in those years, make sure it's been replaced with the updated factory unit. It will probably need suspension work in the near future. If you need to depend on a mechanic to maintain this car - RUN AWAY NOW!!!
You'll hear lots of stories of how Prius's go past 400K miles, so why are there so many in the junk yard or why are there so many 'good' used junk parts for sale? It's like the gambling acquaintance that you know. Every few years you'll hear that he's hit another small jackpot. What you don't hear is that he's up to his eyeballs in debt, and that he giving his weekly paycheck to the casino.
