I am searching for a reliable spare tire kit for my new Prius Prime as I often drive from the US to Canada and do remote cycling and camping with my Prius. Would the dealer have OEM kits or are there aftermarket options. I just don’t feel comfortable on certain trips to be without an option to simply change the tire.

    I doubt there’s a readymade kit. @Hammersmith has compiled a summary of what’s needed.

Depending on how far off the beaten path your going to wonder - I'd carry a full size or compact spare tire and highway plug kit. Verify that the Toyota tire pump is in good working order biannually. If you don't know how to use anything, print out instructions and shove them into your glove box or jack well.

    Hope this helps...

i have been considering the ez spare wheel if i have to go on a cross country trip. there's the ease of mind knowing there's a spare tire in the back if needed.

I'm just going to do my obligatory post where I say you can just get the Toyota OEM spare wheel, tool kit, and a tire from TireRack and save anywhere from $75 to $200 over the aftermarket spare kits. The only difference is the spiffy bags some of the aftermarket kits come with.

And I second the suggestion to just get a full size wheel and tire if you're going to a remote or rugged area.

I decided to put together my own little spare tire kit I can easily move into and out of the car. Here is what I have bought so far and the bottle jack I am considering.

    42611-0R271 Toyota 17x4 5x114.3 +10 Alloy Wheel $293
    Continental sContact 115/95R17 $130

Tire Case and Cover from Aliexpress
Tire Cover Case Car Spare Tire Cover Storage Bags for Cars Wheel Accessories Portable Wheel Bags $3.18
    and
2 x Gasket Pads for Auto Car Vehicle Spare Tire Tyre Wheel Cover Protector Car Tire Covers Gasket 22inch Diameter $5.42

The bottle jack will be too tall to get under the car as the jacking point will be lower than the standard ground clearance with a flat tire.
The only viable option is a scissors jack.

Whatever tire and wheel combination you choose, it will need to be retained in the storage area. Toyota recommends this method of strapping it in.

    strapping tire.JPG

The equivalent straps can be had from the hardware department of any Walmart at about $6 a pair.

I would use the front cargo hooks illustrated in the Gen 5 manual with the inside "bowl" of the tire facing up. The "bowl can be used for storage.

Putting the tire and fastening it forward still allows access to the rear compartment to store the jack and other tire changing tools.

I prefer using a durable RV tire cover of the proper size to cover the tire.[/QUOTE]

Reference the kit from Modernspare. Aside from the cost, do you think the slightly less overall diameter (stock 19 inch wheel and tire is 26.7", modernspare is 25.5") is a concern? The website says the wheel/tire combo is specifically engineered to work on my 2024 Prius Prime.

What the size descriptor of that spare tire (like 195/65R15 for example)? Or a link?

just wondering if there’s a typo in the two sizes you posted; that’s quite a difference.

It should work fine but may set off your traction control. In that case, turn-off your traction control. As you know, spare tires should always be mounted on the rear axle of a car, so you can maintain control of the car - if something else was to happen. The safest alternative, since your spending that kind of money, buy a full size tire & rim combo. That way you can mount that tire anywhere.

Just my humble opinion. I believe the Subaru tire and rim combo will work on your 2024 Prime - Junk yard is full of them.... Much cheaper too.

    • Continental T135/70R18 Tire W/ A DOT Rating Of (99M) With 25.5” Rolling Diameter For For Extended Vehicle Range.

The whole idea is to have a small spare available to take with on road trips just in case you need to self rescue out in the boondocks somewhere. Trying to avoid the size and weight of full size spares, but will look into other options. I think the Modernspare combo is designed to work with either the 17" or 19" depending on the model of the Prius.

The Owner's Manual spec for spare tire (it's the same regardless if vehicles come with 17" or 19" rims/tires:

    upload_2024-5-28_11-45-40.png

When I plug the Modern Spare size and the above, quite a difference:

    upload_2024-5-28_11-46-48.png

    From this tire calculator site:

    Tire Size Calculator

FWIW, when I've set the spare on our 2010 atop a 195/65R15 tire/wheel combo (stock 3rd gen size), it was within 1/8", on the diameter measure.

Bottom line: the Modern Spare temp spare size is about an inch smaller diameter than what Toyota specs, and will likely be problematic, setting off traction control warnings or whatever.

Well, after talking to the Modernspare sales dept I ordered the ModernSpare combo kit for my 2024 Prime. Shipping dates are backed up to approx Jul 9th due to a parts shortage (jacks). $20 discount for military and first responders. They said it is their 3rd best selling kit right now with a lot of activity. $512 total including $48 flat shipping. Yeah it's more expensive than other options but I like the one stop shopping. 81 mph tire limit, a suggested range of at least 200 miles and should not trigger any warning lights. However, if necessary, how do you turn off Traction control? Don't see that in my manual.

I will update when I get the kit and do a test install.

NVM. Found it. A simple button push on the console to turn it off.

Well you’re intentionally under sizing from the Toyota spec'd spare size, by roughly an inch on the diameter. I would put more credence in what Toyota recommends, than Modern Spare.

You'll still have at least one yellow lamp in your dash cluster - the TPMS lamp. Your spare isn't going to have a sensor in it.

Just make sure you place that spare in the rear and move the good rear tire to the front; if one of your front tires go flat. The car will get really squirrelly with that differently sized tire in the front. If you have to 'jerk' the steering wheel over for an emergency maneuver it may fold over.

Good idea on the front tire issue. 50% chance the flat is on the rear. The spare wheel/tire combo is pretty substantial but not designed for spirited driving I am sure. Of course the salesman is going to sugarcoat it but it is what they do for a variety of vehicles.
This may not be an optimal solution, just a good enough solution if necessary.
Irritates me I have to worry about this but I did buy the car so now it's problem solving time.
My wife is taking a road trip in the fall so I wanted a flat tire solution for her if roadside assistance is out of reach. And yes, I will show her how to change the flat before she leaves. Hopefully a good samaritan would do it anyway but she would probably have to supervise.
Anyway, I will report back on how this all goes when I finally get the spare, put it on, and test it.
