TMPS reset when replacing tires?

    I'm replacing stock tires on my 22 Prius Prime soon.
    From what I understand, TPMS doesn't need to be reset / reprogrammed? Same rims, just new tires.

    If sensors are reused as well, should be no problem. Assuming they’re not damaged somehow in the process.

    Unless your tire guy screws up the wheel sensors, there's no reprogramming required.

    It is not necessary but technically the sensors(wheels) should be in the same location (Driver/passenger front/rear). But if they mixed this up, there wouldn't be an issue. The TPMS light will not be on.
    Tire shops always mess up something when they work on my cars. I always remove the valve caps because I know they will lose one or two and use a mismatched one. I can't stand that. :)

    They will also remove and replace the valve stem cores to deflate the tires easily. It is super convenient for them that way. And I hate that too. Hopefully, they will not damage any of your TPMS. Or programming will be needed.

    If they mess it up and your TPMS light comes on (blinking) and they tell you to drive 15-20 miles and it will go away. It won't. At least in my case it never did. This happened to me twice. They couldn't do the relearn properly. I had to reprogram it.

    Me too, because shopping at Costco they always toss yours and replace with green, which I don't like the look of.
    I don't see anything wrong with that. They maybe even replace them, not sure.
    In my experience with Costco, they seem to be completely incapable of mounting four directional tires so they're usable (two clockwise for right side, and two counterclockwise, for left side). Last time 'round (last fall) they did four clockwise. Time before that it was 3 one way, and one the other. I've given up on trust: peel the cute plastic bags off, check them, go back in and let them know.

    There isn't anything wrong replacing the stem cores. I just find it unnecessary and would like to keep the original part. That part will rarely deteriorate and need replacing. Once they replaced one for me, they didn't tighten it well. I got home, and as soon as I removed the valve cap to check the pressure, the tire started losing air. I didn't have the tool to tighten it up. I had to go back to the shop to have them fix it. There are other convenient ways to deflate tires without removing them.

    Tire shops make easy money by claiming you are required to get rebuild kits for the sensors or something like that. I don't know if this is valid. With your less than 2 year old sensors, I'd leave them alone.

    The green valve caps signal that the tires have been filled with nearly 100% nitrogen...instead of the low quality 78% nitrogen mixture in air. The only real advantage of a nitrogen fill is that it is very dry which could also be achieved with good air dryers on the shop's air compressor.

    I had a shop mount directional tires, and I looked at them. I told the tire guy, "Oh, man, that warehouse sent you 3 right side tires and only one left side." He looked grumpy, didn't say a thing, and remounted & balanced one. My current Bridgestone tires don't have directional tread but have specified outside sidewalls. These got mounted correctly the first time..

    Not sure if you're joking. The tires are all the same; it's just the shop needs to be on their toes, flip them around so mounted on right and left side of vehicle they're rolling correct direction.

    Again, Costco's Tire Shop is terrible at this; screwed mne up, both times I've purchased directionals from them. I idly wonder how many cars are on the road with Costco-mounted directional tires going the wrong direction...

    My Mazda 6 2009 had the same TPMS sensors in its summer wheels until we scrapped it in 2022 (subframe rust, gotta love living in regions with lots of salt on the roads). It was only filled with plain air from my cheap air compressor. My winter wheels TPMS didn't last as long, but it's because the stem oxidized and broke, not because of battery failure. The car had over 200,000 km on it and over 150,000 km were with those summer wheels.
