First Oil Change

I'ver personally never had an issue with oil condensation if I'm driving somewhat regularly in the winter. Hybrid, PHEV, or ICE, the condensation will burn off once it hits temp and stays there for a while. The issue with on/off for engines is moot for a hybrid I think, assuming the oil hits operating temp it won't drop to parked overnight in the cold temperatures if it turns off to avoid idling at a red in hybrids (for example). Maybe if your PHEV shuts the ICE off for a good long while in EV mode you could face the condensation issue, but when its really cold the cars favour HEV mode anyway, so chances are its not a problem at all.

My concern is whether or not the dealerships have 0W8 oil easily accessible for the new gen. I want to do a break in oil change on my car, but I would prefer not to do it with 0w16, then find out there still isn't 0W8 for the next change (the manual says 0W16 can be used in between the W8 changes).

 

Did I miss something and you're talking about a different car? The gen5 Prius uses 0W-16, not 0W-8. I won't be surprised if Toyota eventually switches to 0W-8 in a Prius, but they haven't done it yet. The Lexus UX300h, which will use the same powertrain as the gen5 Prius, will get a 0W-8 spec when it launches in 2025.

Double-check that if you haven't already. I've looked at the 2023 & 2024, Prius & Prius Prime, US/Canadian online manuals, and they all say 0W-16 in the vehicle specifications section. Also look under your hood and at the oil cap. They should all say 0W-16.

Or just throw caution to the wind, use 0W20 lol.

 

I have a newborn and I was doing a bunch of reading about other new hyrbids that need 0w8 and got my lines crossed from the info -_-

Note to self: newborn = quadruple check every dumb thing you plan to say/write/do ;D Good thing theres a big sticker, I'm sure I would have quad checked once I actually had the car in hand.

 

That 0w-8 is not impossible to find, anymore, but when it is found, if you need it to meet specs of a new Toyota, it's almost 5x as expensive as the best deals for 0w-16 and 0w-20
I've only seen 0w-8 sold in quart size for regular consumers at $25 per.

 

Not that we need it, but the 0W-8 part number for a 6qt case of TGMO is 00279-08QTE. MSRP price is $119.49($20/qt). You can find it for $82.56($13.75/qt) at several Toyota dealers. You can also order a single quart using the part number 00279-08QTE-01 for basically the same price/qt.

0W-16 is:
6qt - 00279-16QTE - $56.71($39.18)
1qt - 00279-16QTE-01 - $9.27($6.41)

So, yeah, 0W-8 is just a little bit more expensive. /sarcasm lol

 

Thanks for the part #'s and sharing your research,, I gave up after seeing my search results without the part #'s and getting a price form a local dealers parts dept.
I'm still waiting for it to show up as Valvoline and Mobil 1 at walmart in the 5 quart jug, or just recently found 12 quart case, maybe even at a reasonable price,. to add to my stock.

walmarts super tech brand just released a 5 quart jug of 0w-20 for $18 locally. I haven't tried it yet though.

 

0w16 was probably just as pricey when it came out. Now the major oil brands have it for about the same price as other viscosities.

 

I'm flipping back and forth on my future oil selections(next oil change in about 2 months). I had decided on Ravenol 0W-16 EFE for $70/4L($16.50/qt), but I'm leaning back to TMGO for $6.50/qt. Cost isn't the issue; it's what I want my oil to be. TMGO has an insane amount of moly and a couple other additives, but I like the probable lower volatility of the Ravenol. I'm concerned solely about long-term sludge/carbon build-up in the piston rings, and I'm not sure which oil will best prevent that. I'm not concerned at all with the anti-wear characteristics of the additive packages as Toyota's metallurgy and manufacturing makes that meaningless as long as you use any kind of quality oil and reasonable oil change intervals.

Not sure if Longo in LA for $15.xx or one in Colorado Springs for $14.xx ( the other two I saw ), might have worked out less expensive per quart of oil, what do other think?

I could sure use a quart and assembly lube while reassembling my 89 Kaw EX-500 engine after it was vandalized and didn't quite get me all the way back home that night after grocery shopping.

 

The trick is to use one of the autoparts.toyota.com domains(I use autoparts.lewistoyota.com) and make sure to order at least $75 worth of stuff. You get free shipping after that. So buy enough stuff for two oil changes and some wiper inserts or air filters or something to get you to $75. Then you just have to pay your local tax that you would've had to do anyway(maybe).

 

My local parts dealer also has the $75 free shipping option. I typically choose the pick up my order option since it's usually about the same cost /. value on any priced order as finding it cheaper online when including shipping, My last order was processed in less than 3 hours and I had it home less than 6 hours after I placed the order which was around $50
Some orders are cut and dry simple,. others can take more work.

 

When it comes to genuine Toyota stuff, I only go to my local dealer if it's a really cheap part(bolts, clips, etc.) or I need it quick(pick up next day). Both nearby* dealers charge 105% MSRP on parts, and I've got an online dealer that charges 69% MSRP with free shipping after $75. That price difference gets big real quick with how much Toyota parts cost. If you've got a local dealer that gives a discount on MSRP, I envy you.

For non-genuine stuff, I tend to shop local if it's something I can get that way. I've got a Napa almost within walking distance, and many other options within an hour. It's a good excuse to wander the store and pick up some impulse purchases.
