I just assumed that I could swap over a CD player from my parts car into one of my cars that didn't come with a CD player, but feeling around in there, I can't find a loose connector to plug this into. Does it plug in the back of the radio cluster? I thought I remembered it disconnecting from a harness. If it plugs into a harness, and if the car didn't come with a CD player, will the harness not be there? If not, can I easily swap over a short harness from the parts car it came out of?
The CD player wasn't shown in the 2001 wiring diagram I've got, but I'm pretty sure it needed a wye sort of harness to plug in where R4 (the 12-pin) plugs in, with the original R4 plugging into it, and a plug for the CD player. Some of the pins of R4 are identified in the 2001 diagram, but it doesn't show pins 1 and 6 (right channel audio in, + and −), 2 and 7 (left channel + and −), 3 (ground), or 4 (mute). I cribbed those from a drawing that existed once upon a time on wiki.priusforum.de but that I haven't been able to find on the wayback machine.
OK, I will grab the harness off that parts car. Strange that it doesn't show the CD in the wiring diagram and only mentions it once in the service manual describing how to clean CDs.
I'm not sure it was even available in the earliest Gen 1s. A bunch of things (nav, I think, and side airbags maybe) appeared later in the generation. There was a thread by old member mlibanio about adding nav to a Gen 1 without it, and it was an extra nightmare for a 2001 'cause a lot of wires weren't there.
Aah, OK. I probably need to update my sig here - I only have 1 2001 right now and it's a wrecked parts car. I have 8 02s and 1 03.
