Hi everyone I’m new here, big user on the Ioniq forum and ecomodder. I turned my Ioniq hybrid into a fuel saving beast that gets 91 mpg on the highway

my next project is to get a 2023/2024 Prius LE and I’ll be modding it to get better gas mileage. I’m interested I. The AWD version since I do a lot of snowboarding and take a lot of dirt road BLM roads in the summer for gold prospecting. Sadly the awd takes an mpg hit ( though car and driver I believe said the awd version of gen 4 gave 1 extra BETTER mpg on the 70 mph interstate drive test they did)

I want to mod the new Prius to get maximum mpg since apparently Toyota cared about styling and power versus beating Hyundai at the numbers game

a list of mods I will be doing are

air suspension so I can raise clearance even higher for those bumpy roads and then lower it to get better aerodynamics

    Possible passenger side mirror removal

    flat disc/moon cap wheel covers

    a rear wheel fender skirt

box cavity fins at the rear or a possible bot tail trail hitch that’s removable.

Cat shield underneath with possible extra underbody floor coverings and a rear diffuser

the big question I have is about wheels

obviously smaller wheels give better gas mileage, so I’m wondering what’s the smallest wheel size that’ll fit?

my Ioniq uses 195/65/15s and apparently last gen Prius used similar size, along with Corolla hybrid

some other posts I saw mentioned 15s aren’t even possible to fit the brakes for the new Prius

so what are the smallest wheels that’ll fit?

again my goal is fuel efficiency, so a smaller radius wheel and possibly skinnier wheel would be best, made out of extremely light weight aluminum alloy. The stock 17s just seem too big. ( plus pricey when constantly buying new all season/summer tires and winter tires every 2 years on average)

    please help.

Don't get the AWD if you wanna hypermile. This isn't a jeep, FWD is more than sufficient. I've posted a ton of stuff on maximizing fuel economy in the G5. Nothing that alters the vehicle from stock though.

How do you get 91 mpg on the highway? You must be driving 35 mph.

i literally made a video documenting it. had cruise control for 20-30 miles on completely flat at sea level in the willamette valley. no AC

i get about 59 mpg at 80 mph, and high 40s to low 50s going 89-90 mph on the interstates in idaho and utah open desert

I’ve had some wheel slip on dirt roads on steep hills here in the mountains in Oregon with low rolling resistance tires. It wouldn’t have happened with awd. Obviously better tires would’ve helped. I’ve never gotten stuck in snow with winter tires, but awd combined with winter tires could open some opportunity for going on trickier terrain, especially with pushing the air lift button and raising clearance a few inches.

I believe it...I've gotten 74 mpg doing extreme pulse-and-glide driving while on the way into work...no A/C or fan running, nothing on but the radio.

    Sounds like a country song!!

Maybe you should be on the next design team.

A lot of people aren’t fans of the design. A top car ceo once said “ we could make the most aerodynamic car possible with over 100 mpg but it would never make it off the sales lot”

The other thing when considering a new car that gets high mpg is learning the maintenance quirks of the car that will keep it getting it's rated mpg. Because the higher the average mpg is the easier it is to notice tiny changes in the average mph calculation and how hard it is to recapture loss of mpg average after noticing the loss. especially as history data piles up with time.
Making the car a possible mechanics nightmare of customer complaints after servicing the car and as it ages.

@phase , I'll be following your modding progress with great interest. Please post updates, if you can. I do a ton of 70-90mph freeway driving and would love to improve my own aero, if you'd feel flattered rather than ripped off of.

The AeroCivic claimed 95 mpg at 65 mph. While the Prius has a larger cross section, it also has a more efficient propulsion system.

Aerocivic - Honda Civic modifications for maximum gas mileage - aerocivic.com

The 2024 non-AWD Prius starts with a CAFE highway rating of almost 78 mpg, city rating of almost 83 mpg, before translation / de-rating to EPA scale. Add enough aero mods ...

I picked up a 2024 Prime SE December 17th at Toyota of Gladstone (Portland). Paid MSRP. Reserved the car while it was on the boat. FYI.

Prius 2023 speedometer is calibrated with 17 inch wheels. I have seen this with an habitual long distance that I was used to do with a Prius 2005. I have confirmed it with Apple Plan. 19 inch wheel circumference is theoretically 1.9% higher than 17 inch. Since MPG is function of distance, display of 1.9% less efficiency can be directly explained by this false calculation. 1.9% could get higher because of 17 inch tire greater flexion that reduces diameter of the wheel and then its practical circumference.

I have a Prius 2023 LTD AWD and installed aerodynamic mag 17 x 6.5J Fast EV01+ Titanium (Fast Part Number: FE01N(+)-1765-65TN+38C661) with 195/60R17 tire. It works really well and has 38 mm offset (Near Prius spec: 40 mm). I installed 66.1 mm to 60.1 mm hub ring and conical nuts with these wheels. I get 3.8 l/100 km (62 mpg) in very good conditions with stock wheels or these new wheels.

What's the weight of those wheels? I might buy a set next summer if they aren't heavy AF and keep the Nokians on the OE for Winter duty!

    Found it! 18.8lb.. tempting!!
