Won’t shut off all the way

    It’s been a few years since I’ve posted, I just lurk and modify my 2 gen 2’s but I have a issue that I can’t resolve or find in the search here or anywhere else so far.
    This is a long post as I’ve put as much detail in it as I can.
    so
    tl:dr
    I shut off my 05 a week ago, went out the next day and the car was dead. 12v battery is just over a month old oem.
    I put the jump box on it and it opened right up and started. I put the battery charger on it figuring I hadn’t closed a door completely or something. Much later that day I checked and it was at a 40% completion. It should have been fully charged by then. I pulled the charger, started it up, drove it around fine,no cel. I then put my Autel ap200 scanner on it and the only code was a historical low voltage one, cleared it and went to shut it down to hook the charger back up.
    Now the problem, I powered it down and the dash shut off, but the mfd stayed on as well as the aux power keeping my phone charging and my air filter running. Knowing the cars get weird when the 12v is low I pulled the battery connections and put the charger back on overnight. In the morning the battery showed a full charge and had been running in maintainer mode. I checked the battery with my Autel battery tester that tests it under load and it reads good and 100% capacity.
    Hooked it back up to the car, the usual clicks happened and the dash lit up like it was in aux on mode ( started without the foot on the brake mode). This was with the fob still in the house. I then shut it down, no fob, and it turned off but the mfd was still on. I then grabbed the fob started it and it runs fine shuts off but still a live mfd. Tried turning off the smart key, same behavior but it didn’t want to release the key from the slot. Held the power button down for 3-5 seconds and it released the key but the mfd is still on.
    I’ve tried this many times and it never has tried to hold onto the key again.
    It does several odd things besides keeping the mfd and aux power plug live. If I open the door the dash starts beeping at me. No key in the ignition smart key on or off it continues to do this. If I get out and close the door I get 3 beeps from under the hood. If I try to use the door switch to lock the doors it immediately unlocks them again.
    Now I’ve tried unplugging the 12v a couple times, no change. I’ve pulled all the relays one by one, the mfd never turns off.
    Before I start trying unplugging ecu’s does anyone have a bright idea how to localize this?
    I’m disabled so I can’t get under the dash and start pulling things so I need some place to start. The car throws no cel or any codes that I can find using my several code readers iPhone, android and my old Toyota hacked techstream setup.
    I’m kinda stumped. I think the car believes there is a key in it some where but both fobs are accounted for I’d I’ve moved them a hundred or more feet away just to be sure. The mfd was replaced over 6 months ago because the display was so faded it couldn’t be read, the cluster has been repaired and upgraded with a new cap and such a few years ago.
    ‍I haven’t yet pulled all the fuses one by one, that’s my next and last step before taking it to a dealer but I’m expecting a very expensive trouble shooting bill from them as techstream doesn’t show anything errors, I’m by no means a techstream expert and the installation is at least 10 years old.
    Any suggestions or insights? I’ve got surgery coming up in a couple of days and it will be weeks before I’ve recovered enough to dig into this again.

    And you're speedometer and gas are visible cm monitor ok?

    have you unplugged all accessories like your phone, air filter and anything else?

    maybe the battery needs a load test

    yes everything is visible when it’s running or in acc. It’s only when I try to shut it off that the problem occurs, everything but the MFD and the power outlet/cigaret lighter turn off. It acts like my 09 does if I just quickly hit the on button without my foot on the brake. If I do that it goes into the same state. MFD on, power port on. if I open the door constant beeping in the dash and when I close the door 3 beeps from under the hood. But I can’t get it to turn completely off.
    you can get it into Acc mode by pressing and holding the on button for a second or 2. And get it to start by putting your foot on the brake and hitting the on button.
    If you move the key away from the car you can get into acc mode but no start and flashing key on the dash. but nothing will get it to shut down except disconnecting the battery. If you reconnect the battery even after letting it so all night it goes fright back into that mode.
    mfd on, acc power on.

    I’ve unplugged every thing, even unplugged the relays in the fuse box one by one mfd never shuts off. Battery passes load test and I’ve taken the battery out of my running 09 and used it. Same problem.

    I can get my 09 in the same mode by not putting my foot on the brake and quickly hitting the start button. It will exhibit the same symptoms, mfd on, power port on, obd2 off.
    but I can then just tap the button and the 09 turns off and the 05 doesn’t. looked at the live data with both cars in acc mode and everything except the actual key fobs match.
    it’s getting dark so I’ll start unplugging things tomorrow.

    No good suggestions here, you would have to backtrack where the power is coming from. I would be looking at the ACC relay to see if Power Source Control is commanding it on or if something is shorting power into the accessory circuit.     I’ve got those diagrams spread all over my kitchen table. It appears that one of the ig relays is either stuck or the ecu is commanding it to stay on. It powers the acc relay. I’m looking for what powers the acc and the mfd both on but everything else is off. I’d just pull the acc relay to see what would happen if I could get to it. I can’t bend over that far (back issues) and can’t look up without losing my balance( vertigo). So I’ve been feeling around as best as I can trying to see if I can identify it before starting to take the dash apart.
    I’ve got surgery scheduled for tomorrow to hopefully help with the vertigo and other sinus problems so I’ll probably have to disconnect the battery for a week or so until I recover. Hell of a time for it to flip out.

    The power source control ecu has seen the brake is not pushed but the power button led stays red, so it should not have the acc powered up, if im reading the flow condition correctly the acc relay should turn the led green. But the acc is most definitely on, and comes on as soon as power is restored. So either the power source ecu is toast or the acc relay is stuck. I’m looking for the logic that controls the led color now to trace where the power is coming from.

    Pulling the power and restoring it puts the car immediately back into the acc on condition. In step 7 of the system outline this is what it’s supposed to do as the state is stored. I’ve tried getting it into the emergency hydrid shut down condition by holding the power button in for 3 seconds and it defaults to everything off but acc on as it should. And this works, I’m wondering now if the park switch logic is what’s holding it on. It’s supposed to check that it’s in park or initiate the park condition before it shuts the acc off. The park led lights up but the acc never shuts off.
    I might have to take it up to the mechanic to have them pull the relay to see if that clears it.

    Just wanted to post a follow up after a few weeks of working on this.
    I finally had to get some pro help. After spending days tracing wires and following circuits in the electrical manual I was stuck. I took the car to Hometown Hybrids in Houston and the owner Matthew was able to figure this out. The issue was something was back feeding 12v. Pulling the dome light fuse would stop it, but that wasn’t a fix, he finally discovered that it was an issue with the abs relays, two of which were very warm to the touch. I had pulled all the relays in the car one by one without success. He just grabbed all 3 out of a parts car and replaced them and the problem was solved.
    I haven’t spent time yet going over the circuit diagrams to figure out why the dome light relay would effect this and what the relays were doing and why. I’ll get to that in a while, I was interrupted in my repairs by a minor surgery and freezing weather but it’s back on the road. If you need Prius repairs I can’t recommend them highly enough. Anywhere near Texas Hometown Hybrids will keep your Prius running.

    And you're not having any ABS troubles at all all the orange lights on the dash for ABS or not lit or anything like that It's interesting that your ABS relays those are the two blue ones would be getting hot like that interesting for sure.

    Usually these antics go on when there's a problem with the CM monitor display which is your gas gauge and your speedometer and what have you and you're holding the button down trying to get the car to shut off and you got to get off of it real quick or it'll go right to the ACC mode or some mode with all the lights on the dash If you hold it too long.

    none whatsoever, no lights on the dash, no errors that techstream could tag nothing. It was a very weird error. I’m an owner that has changed the brake fluid every 2-3 years since I purchased it in January 2005. the abs pump sounds healthy none of the extended run times and odd shutting off and on that a failure would indicate. I have the relays ad I’ll take them apart when I have a bit of time to see if I can identify a fault. It was odd as I had pulled the relays one at a time during the first diagnostic run through so it’s something that’s common to both relays.

    That was among the first things I tried after a lot of trouble shooting, I took a known good one and swapped it in on the off chance that it might be the issue even though all the displays were working correctly. I tried the fast release the 5 second forced shutdown among many other suggestions. I’ve worked on this car a lot over the time I’ve owned it included removing every electrical mod I’ve ever done to the car. Even going so far as to disconnect the various lights that have led bulbs in it. That’s how we found that pulling the dome light fuse would let it shut down. As the energy control module remembers the state the car was in if it loses power unplugged the 12v and then plugging it back in just brought the mfd and cigarette lighter/ power port back on. It just sat there pulling 1 amp with everything disconnected. I posted to lots of forums, contacted some people that used to be regular posters here ( I really wanted to find Hobbit still active) it’s a head scratcher for sure. I thought it had the be the energy control module that sits near the display after pulling the acc relay and putting a new one in. I’m almost 70 now, have a wreaked back and vertigo so bad I can’t look up under the dash. The days of me upside down with signal tracers or my digital scope are behind me which made it extremely frustrating. I have a project car in the garage that I was going to do an interior swap with but started stocking parts and planning to move everything over to it, it’s a high trim level 09 with a lot more comfortable leather seats than my 05 level 2 trim. I think the 05 is jealous of the shiny Red 09 and all the attention it’s been getting. Just weird. ‍♂️

    I don't know man sounds real complicated and lots of hubbub to go on there can't you just get the '09 running have the leather seats and the nicer parts and all of that most of the stuff from the '05 or '06 down will not go on the 09 anyway unless you're going to get out the scope and do a lot of electrical work and blah blah blah at my age which is close to yours and now I'm not doing any of that now that I can buy these whole cars for five and $600 Do what I want with them so re-engineering and all that electrical work now that goes right out the window I'm not fixing to do any of that business I have enough of these cars I can just move to another one and set one out the pasture or whatever we want to call it No need for all these antics in my life at the present time I buy these cars from towing lot so I'm not having $5,000 and what not in any of these things That's what I've gotten all four of mine if that. But by looking at them you would think differently.

    That’s my intention but I’ve got the seats and stuff out of the 09 refreshing the leather, upgrading the stereo and lots of stuff I can do before I swap all the suspension upgrades and build a new exhaust for it. I picked up the car for someone that bought it at auction that didn’t know anything about the cars. So I know that my engine, trans and brake system has been well maintained, I don’t burn more than 1/2 quart of oil between 5,000 mile changes. I’d also like to get some cash out of the car when it’s back to a mostly stock condition. It was a right pain to do it but I really like to be able to complete the refresh on it without having it ready to drive. I have time, not money so a couple hundred to fix a problem is not a big issue.
