Engine rebuild

    I’ve posted a few threads on here the past month regarding my 2014 Prius. It started with a cylinder 3 misfire which I found to be a blown head gasket then when changing the head gasket I found a bend connecting rod on cylinder 3.

    I’ve ordered the piston, rings and a new connecting rod which should be in middle of the week. I’m pulling the short block right now and plan ti check the crank and bearings then will order appropriate bearings.

    I’ve got everything removed that I thought would hold the block to the transmission but it’s still not moving. I’m wondering if I need to remove these two bolts?

    I was advised by a trusted member of Priuschat not to hone the cylinders if the crosshatch pattern is still present. Is there any certain way to determine how much is enough of the pattern left to not hone and how much is gone to indicate honing

    Some foggy memory I have is of reading a Toyota publication somewhere that told me not to hone, period, and replace the block instead if it seemed needed. But I have just tried to find that again, either in the 2010 RM or my older (1NZ) NCF manuals, and I didn't find it. So maybe I imagined it.

    The RM definitely doesn't contain any instruction to hone, as far as I found just now.

    Sorry I cannot authoritatively answer for the Prius engine, but with motorcycles honing was possible for iron blocks or alloy blocks with steel liners, but not with alloy blocks that had nitrided surfaces that reduced cylinder wear as those surface anti-wear treatments were quite thin.
