My wipers just died. I suspect that the wiper motor has failed. Does the Prius gen 1 has a dedicated wiper motor or does it fit from a different Toyota model? I have the nhw11 usa model.
Hollander.com I think they cross reference parts for the industry.what fits what model etc. the linkage on Prius is kinda weird .
If it's a Gen 1 (pretty old) and all you know yet is the wipers don't work, don't jump to the wiper motor just yet. Start with the simple stuff like this.
In the gen. 1, the 30A wiper fuse is no. 8 in the passenger compartment fuse box, located on the driver side in the instrument panel next to the door. See Fuse Box Diagram Toyota Prius (XW11; 2000-2003).
The situation is that wipers started to work by themselves. Just like that. All fuses were good and all. I suspect some water got into the wiper motor connector and shirt circuit protection kicked in. Or it was just random.... That Holland.com website does not work so I still do not know if other models of Toyora use the same motor. I assume they do as it is Toyota way.
Another trick is to call a junkyard and tell them what you've got and ask them what does it say fits and they'll tell you Yaris Prius year ranges whatever etc . Usually small electric motors like that can go to the alternator shop and they'll fix them sometimes not but usually they can straighten them out.
There was already a recent thread one this topic; see Gen 1 Wiper motor | PriusChat. The short answer, alas, is "no," it's not the Toyota way with this item, or with most others on the gen. 1, which is pretty much sui generis. It would be nice....
I had a wiper failure only once (not in my Prius), and it was just that the plug needed to be cleaned up. So make sure the fuse is clean as Chap suggested, pull the motor plug and clean that up really well. Then drive on and see what happens. (The one fail I had was on a minivan. My wife was in it at the time, but was able to drive on home in the rain because I had some manner of Rain-X type product on the windshield. So you might do that just in case...it'll at least be easier to get off the road in the event that they stop again at an inopportune moment.)
On Car-parts.com, the database of many dismantlers, it does a good job on providing interchange parts from the other years. So when you search for on 01 wiper motor, you can choose to get only 01s or select interchange to get other years/cars that work. When I searched for your part for interchange, it shows 02 motors as well. And it appears to have many of them priced as low as $25, so not a big risk. Plus, shipping shouldn't be much. Just sort by zip code and there might be one near you. Easy to put on. I have a couple if you want one, but I'd charge you the same $25 to pull it off the car and package for shipping, and make nothing for doing that. But, I don't mind.
The gen 1 wiper motor also comes off the funny looking bracket if it has such a thing right? So you can just have the motor in your hand without the transmission and or linkages it's called?.
SYK, one of my parts cars in an 01, #259 actually. And you can tell it was a sweet ride before the wreck - the interior was cleaner than most of my newer cars. I already have the wipers and plastic trim off exposing the motor and brackets, so easy to get, if you still need one. I'm pretty sure they work, I drove the car Denver to Houston after buying it, but don't recall using the wipers.
