I have a Prius Prime SE coming in next month that has a handful of PIOs. I don’t mind any of them except for the body side molding. I should contact the dealer and as if the SE has arrived in a port yet; if not, then maybe I can get them to not install the body side molding…

 

If you know the VIN or which one it is on your dealer's website, what you're looking for is 'build phase' or 'in transit'. Despite what it sounds like, build phase includes the time the car spends on the ship. The in transit phase begins once the car begins processing at the port facility. If yours is still in the build phase, your dealer can remove the stuff you don't want. Just note that some dealers refuse to do it or lie about not being able to. It's a dealer by dealer choice. I suspect dealers that are part of a chain(Longo, Corwin, etc.) are more likely to refuse to do it as it might be forbidden by corporate policy in order to keep profits as the most important thing. But that's just a guess(I bought mine through a small, independent dealership).

 

Thanks for the suggestion! The Prius SE currently has a status of ‘build phase,’ so it sounds like I might still have a chance to cancel the body side molding. I’ll email tomorrow and see how it goes.

 

Has anyone received a dealer discount below MSRP—yet?

 

Yes, I’m paying $2K under MSRP. Reserved an "in transit" vehicle about 3 weeks ago and it’s scheduled to arrive at the dealer on Feb 1st. It’s a XLE AWD. Located in MA.

Wow, that’s fantastic. Every dealer around here in very upstate NY is either selling at MSRP or above (the “market adjustment”) without a problem. Most cars, prime or regular, are either already sold or selling within a few days of arriving at the deal.

 

Prius. Prime doesn’t come in XLE trim or AWD.

 

Yeah they’re selling well here too, with hardly any availability on the lots. I just shopped around for the best deal on an "in transit" vehicle. MSRP was $34,844 and I’m paying $32,844 (not including sales tax and fees).

Prius/Prius Prime production is still very limited though. I doubt we will see dealer discounts in Southern California anytime soon.

When I bought my 2021 Prius Prime Limited, they were going for a dime a dozen with all kinds of discounts, rebates, and credits. Hardly anyone wanted them at that time because the gas was cheap and people were still scared of EVs. These days, not only there is more demand but also less supply, which is making it a seller's market for Toyota. I think it is a bad decision to trade in for a Gen 5 as a result. Just like when trading stocks, do the the opposite of what everyone else is doing, and you will be financially much better off.

 

It’s a similar scenario for me. I was holding out for a LE in supersonic red, but I started getting a little impatient after 8 months. I eventually was able to reserve a prime SE in supersonic while it was in “build phase.” It’s due to be delivered anometime in Feb. Unfortunately, the dealer is -~3.5 hours away, though I guess that’s the price of wanting a specific exterior color.

 

Sometimes the decision is more than just financial in that simple a construction though. And in general, trading in a car you got 2 years ago for another is, broadly speaking - a bad decision regardless of the over/under on price fluctuations epsecially if its just for model year/generation reasons.

 

Up until 2021, you could actually make money trading in a one-year-old Prius Prime.

Many here traded in their 2022 for a 2023.

I will probably wait for a Gen 6 or something else. TSS 4.0 or 5.0 should be here by then. Mine with TSS 2.0 will be about nine or ten years old at that time. It will need new tires, spark plugs, coolant, and ATF, but that should be about it. I hardly even use the friction brakes. I have less than two years of $656-a-month car payments left.

finally picked up mine yesterday here in Canada

Paid MSRP and the total cost was exactly the same as the Toyota website said it would be. Then again we have laws that make it so that the most they can charge is the all in advertised price anyway.

 

Congrats! I wish we had that same law here in the US.

 

I paid $34,288 for a 2024 Prime SE with floor mats and symbolic "mud guards" delivered to Montrose, Colorado.
This included $499 delivery charge.
Had to drive 250 miles (each way) to get car, as Toyota does not import this model to New Mexico.

 

I checkedd it out. 08/23 was the last date an SE was sold in NM. None in 2024.
I wonder why ?
