    2006 105k miles
@96k miles brand new OEM HV @96k miles battery brand new OEM brake actuator

Front end noise started around 1k miles ago.
    Especially at higher speeds.

Starts around 25-30 mph and get louder as speed increases.

    No codes
Poor MPG 35/36 (compared to my other 2nd gen that gets 44mpg

It’s not the wheel bearings. See video for close up of where the noise is coming from. Cars up on jack stands with wheels off.

    Has anyone experienced this?
Total tranny replacement or are the bushings/bearings just shot.
    MG1 or MG2?

I have 2 parts cars with good engine and trans.
Trying to get some ideas from this knowledgeable group before I start into it.

I posted videos of the noise on FB Prius DIY page but everyone said it was CV joints. I had a pair on hand so I changed them out tonight.
    non difference in the sound.
Can I post a video here?

Yes, please post link to the video... I assume it's not your brake rotor dust plates or exhaust shielding because those don't get louder as speed increases, but they definitely are the biggest noise makers.

it’s definitely not the brakes. The sound is coming right from the spot where the CV joint gets inserted into the tranny.

    How do I post videos??
my video album doesn’t show up when I try to attach a file.

Just paste a link in your message. And if it's a youtube video it will automatically convert to a youtube player.

Currently we're waiting for owner of the website to upgrade to newest version of forum software so we can post images again.

And if it's coming from where the axles attached to the tranny I'd say confirm you installed the new axles correctly and if that checks out live with it until it gets really bad and then swap out the tranny with a new one.

Okay so it's the socket where the CV joint plugs into the transmission yeah transmissions coming out to fool with that I do believe I think you can get the seals replaced from the outside but any of the crazy nonsense You're just going to be pulling it out so you might as well get one of your transmissions out of your other vehicles regardless of mileage and all that nonsense when it was parked if it was quiet working fine the transmission that is it should go in this car and do the same or you can pull the one you have out and go to fix it on it that'll take a day or two or three or whatever for parts or you can swap out the transmission that you already own a couple hours of your time depending upon what kind of mechanic work you do at this point I don't do a lot of transmissions anymore I have somebody that charges me like $230 or something along those lines and this is extremely rare you just chalk it up to whatever You just got unlucky whatever the case may be especially with the mileage we're talking about I didn't even look to see where you're located but 96,000 miles replacing the hybrid battery and brake actuator at 100k wow. Either I've been really lucky with the five I've had and the four I have now or you're really not so lucky either way we look at it.

That sounds like the inner CV joint kind of you'd have to pull that off the car and have a real good look at it Is there any slop in that joint click clack click clack turning advancing and retarding pulling in and out when you pull it out and pull the balls out and have a look at it you'll see or you won't when that thing is stuck in and the snap ring is caught in the transmission It's a fairly stout connection although it's looser than you would think It's still pretty good

I replaced both sides last night.
There isn’t any slop, they’re installed correctly but the noise is still there.

You replaced both what those are new CV joints new axles I have to look at the video again but if that's the case or those are just other axles off another car that was working fine no problem then you're going into the transmission or you're just going to take one of your transmissions like the axles you know are good and plop it in the car then when you have the other one out you can set it off to the side and when you're bored one day you can blast it open and have a look in there and see what sloppy and what got taken out or not.

The axles I installed in the car last night were brand new, never used straight out of the box. there is no way it’s the CV axles.

What inside the transmission could be causing this?
    The MG1 and MG2?

I understand this is a rare problem and not many people have experienced this. hoping someone comes across this that has some answers.

    Toyota master tech???

Just look up front wheel drive transaxles there's a bunch of transmission shops this is not just because of the hybrid synergy drive system this is a normal transmission CV joint housing problem I've seen this before on bunches of front wheel drive cars there are sleeves bushings and bearings in there One is probably bad or at least on that side does the same other side have the same sound coming out of it if you go on the other side put your mechanic's stethoscope right at the entrance area maybe an inch back or something like that and listen? If you look at the parts break down for the transmission you'll see the bearings and sleeves and whatever goes where you're pushing that spline shaft into . This seems like it's right there where those splined shafts are plugging right into the transmission. This is not really a Prius problem The front wheel drive problem yes and there's probably gajillions of videos of all the front drive cars similar to us in market the Hondas the scions etc.
