I’m helping my friend sort through this weird issue

car starts totally normal, door locks work when in keyless go, buttons work for remote lock and unlock

but if I stick it in the slot it won’t turn the car on

    No other major issues

What do you mean if you stick it in the slot it won't turn the car on? When you stick it in the slot you still have to push the on button!. So proximity sensing is working If the car's locked and the remotes in your pocket and you walk up to the door if you put your hand on the door handle you hear the door or doors unlock and you pull the handle and sit in the car without removing the remote from your pocket you can step on the brake push the on button and off you go Is this correct? Why would you want to do anything different than this? If all of that is working as stated above then slotting the remote and pushing the on button with the brake pedal depressed should ready the car and off you go and then if you try to pull the remote out of the slot as you're backing out of the driveway it shouldn't give it to you Is this a fact? I'm not exactly sure what you mean by putting the remote in the slot in the car doesn't start.

Come to think of it, I have never put my key in the slot in the dash.. I am under the impression that the only reason to do that is if the fob's battery dies... you can get in with the metal key and insert the fob in the slot to start, with a press of the power button. I could be wrong about that.

yes I realize you still have to hit the power button, but basically the key in the slot + power button does not work

the reason I found this out is because my friend's car is an earlier gen 2 without the smart key function, so when he moved my car he tried to start it by inserting the key into the slot and it didn't work

a testament to the reliability of the smart key system but nonetheless, in the event it does fail, having the option to start the car with the key in the slot would be a god send

That's one of the first things I do if I'm buying a car that's going to be a driver not a parts car is have the remotes in my hand slot them starting back up the car d slot the one remote slot the second remote ready the car pull it back forward just to make sure that I check the metal key to make sure both of them open the driver door just because I don't know what you do Knocking money off or only one remote or one remote that's fully functional and the other one that's not and the key doesn't even fit the door .

So in your case everything works until you try to start with the key in the slot. Same key in your hand in the car is able to start the car

Does the slot light work I think it's got a green light on it or what have you Is it always dark You know they call that slot on amplifier if you see one at the junkyard hanging out of a car and flip over and take a picture of its label it'll talk about amplifier so on and so forth has a bunch of numbers on it not just the part numbers maybe the slot itself maybe it's not plugged into the car something I have four or five slots here that I can unplug and plug in place of another one should I desire so there's always that It is remotely possible I don't know that I found one that's broken yet but I have a few of them.

Could be that the fob shell was replaced and the RFID chip was never swapped over, or it does have a chip and somehow(?) it was never programmed into the immobilizer.

Also possible that there's a problem with the car, but you would have to scan it with a capable scantool to find out.

    Same question as above.
    Was the fob shell replaced?

Do you have more than 1 fob? At some point you'll need to have locksmith test the fob to see if the RFID chip is good. Also need to scan the car with a capable scantool to check the immobilizer and SKS for codes.
