Wanted to share a finding in case anyone else has this issue. I did a search and did not see any other post concerning a GEN 4 with a back up camera issue. I have a 2016 GEN 4 Touring 3, bought it new. 17K miles on it currently. When you put it in reverse there is nothing but a black screen. It was an intermittent problem at first, then happened all the time. From other posts on older models, it was pointing at the camera itself being the issue. $175 on ebay for a used cam, or $1000 at a dealership have been some prices I have seen thrown around. I disconnected the cam at the back, reconnected and no joy. Then I checked the fuse that is under the dash on the driver side. It is labeled BACKUP LP, 7.5A fuse. I pulled the fuse and checked reverse. No cam of course, the screen stayed with the audio and did not turn black, and the reverse lights at the back did not come on. The fuse checked good. I put the fuse back in and checked reverse again. Camera cam came back!!!! I don't know if this reset something but it was an easy fix. I posted a pic of the labeled fuse under the driver side dash. If anyone else has the problem, hope this fixes it for them. Gus//
I have had this intermittent problem with my 2016 also. It never seems to last more than a few hours and has always come back without any effort on my part except patience...
The camera came back, and now it is out again. I put in a new fuse to eliminate the possibility of a faulty one. No joy on the camera coming back. I need to figure out what the issue is. Gus//
Have the same problem. Intermittent, more off than on but can't pinpoint the issue... temperature? Warmer days doesn't work more than cooler days... driving me crazy!
Gus, did you ever figure anything out with this? Can't find anything else... You still having the problem? Tom
I have determined the issue is "HEAT" related. After removing the hatch panel and under dash panels and checking all the connections, the problem persisted. However, as the temperatures got cooler (Pennsylvania) the problem disappeared. I thought the issue was resolved until the temperature got hotter recently. Low and behold the issue re-emerged. This time I closely monitored when the issue occurred and determined that it was only when the sun was on the rear hatch. When I cooled the car (in the garage) the problem disappeared. Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?
I had the same problem on my 2017 Prius backup camera until my Toyota dealer found thru a routine maintenance that my 12V battery has a low Cold Cranking Amperage (half of the number) and it needs to be replaced. So, I replaced my 12V battery and now my backup camera is working all the times, no more black screen or flickering screen on/off. That was my experience.
