I would only resort to oils with the "high mileage" moniker if you have runaway oil consumption. They contain additives that swell seals, mostly the valve seals, are used to forestall the need to open up the head and replace the seals. Otherwise I'd avoid them.
The high mileage one has additives in it that better protect engines with significant wear... But I've never seen any independent tests that demonstrate the effectiveness of those additives.
My thought is that the high mileage oil contains a higher level of detergent additives that may be beneficial to an engine with low tension oil rings like the Gen 3 Prius.
No... All the ads on the internet have trained us to not look closely. Lol... Ok, here's your actual answer: What is the difference between Mobil and Mobil 1 oil? - Quora
For help with what to choose I use mobiloil.com 's "What to buy -> Find the right motor oil", which defaults to order by "Performance level". Strangely Mobil 1 High Mileage is nowhere on that list! So I guess Mobil wants you to choose the Mobil Full Synthetic High Mileage, as it's on the top of the list (if over 75,000 mi that is). EDIT- I've been a fan/user of Mobil oils for years. I used Mobil 1 Annual Protection when they released it and continued to use it until they discontinued it, 20k mi or 1 yr, nice golden oil poured out. Now they've transitioned that 20k mi to their Extended Performance line, and I'm not impressed, not that nice golden hue. I'm afraid I'm switching where I can to Super Tech 20k mi formula when available in appropriate weight, nice golden hue, at better cost. Mobil 1 will still be my primary go to for Euro Formula as they have a good price and formula used/promoted by Euro brands such as Mercedes and Porsche, but besides that I'm starting the migration...
I noticed something new at Walmart yesterday I had never seen. I use Supertech also. Now they have an “advanced high mileage full synthetic 0w-20”. I have never seen the advanced addition to the branding. That is probably most similar to the Mobile One shown on the LEFT in the photo I do believe. iPhone ?
Yep... Same... Super Tech copied Mobil One's idea by putting a lot of motor oil in a bag in a box. Currently the Mobil 1 full synthetic 0W-20 is around $60 and the same package but with Super Tech label is closer to $50. I've been comparing them both and they both seem to break down at about the same mileage, but perhaps the color of the oil is slightly less consistent in the Super Teach version. Thus far I've been going with the theory that they're both from the same factory, just different packaging. Am waiting to find proof that's true or not true, but it's a quite common reality if you've studied different brands of motor oil. Most all brands regardless of claims on the label can be traced back to less than a few locations where they're manufactured.
I could have sworn they were the same in the past because their warranty wording were very similar, then someone pointed out to me that Super Tech is made by Warren Distributing, which appears now to be Highline Warren: https://highlinewarren.com/about/ Along with clear evidence that the legal wording looked obviously different. @PriusCamper You may be correct just like gasoline comes from a very limited number of refineries, then additive packs are applied based on “Manufacturer”, oil may be produced at Warren based on “Manufacturer” specifications. If you peruse down the Highline Warren page I linked you will bump into an image where it looks like the blue Super Tech bottles are being moved along an assembly type line…
Apparently so is Kirkland oil, Costco’s house brand. That’s what I’ve been using, since Toyota bulk oil price for me went through the roof.
The "1" in the product name makes that one more expensive, and possibly better. Same company, same purpose, different marketing price level.
Holy mackerel....is everyone moving to the darkside? (super tech) Kirkland (Costco store-brand) oil | PriusChat I have a shelf full of super tech 5 qt jugs of 10w-40, 5w-30, 5w-20 and 0w-20
Would have never tried it, except I didn’t want to drive the rental with a ticking engine (with what looked like 14k mi without a 1st oil change). And I wanted to minimize the risk of not getting reimbursed so I went with a much cheaper 20k mi oil, (but slightly higher cost matching filter).
The Petroleum Quality Institute tests different oils. They have tested Mobile oils several times so you might check their site.
