Insurance says it can be repaired - thoughts?

Was the motorcycle rider the arborist, or are you? I'm fairly surprised they want to repair. Do you have a really high deductible? Maybe that's why? Most shops might go up to $5K for a repair like that...

On the bright side if the motorcycle rider was the arborist you may have helped save the life of a tree by him crashing into you. So many arborists in our region make a fortune charging near ten thousand dollars cutting down super big and perfectly healthy trees just by scaring the property owner with a bunch of lies about how their life is at risk.

 

I don't know what state that is but in the southeast United States that car would not be getting fixed any kind of way it's going straight to the tow lot for me to strip and short order hell in North Carolina where I am most of the Prius I see at towing breaker yards and what have you don't have a dent in them many of them don't. Most every car I have picked up the body rolling chassis straight I mean maybe a few tiny door dings where kids have opened the door and do another car things like that but even headlights are intact or they're hitting the front end where somebody ram the hell out of somebody playing on their phone that is a common one especially in the generation 3s not so much in the twos

 

This kind of accident would only hold me up for an afternoon that would be drug to my house I would strip it put the parts on another vehicle that I need the stuff for and then haul off the hull to LKQ for about 350.

Make sure it's a licensed shop and bonded shop!! Also check BBB and yelp. Anybody can make a car look good, but is it safe to drive? The labor cost alone would exceed the value of that car; that's assuming the shop, that does the work has a donor car to cut-up for the repairs. That rear driver's side rear wheel alignment may also become an issue. After repairs; I'd take it straight to a shop capable of doing a 4-wheel alignment and pay the $100 to verify the work. It beats replacing that tire every few thousand miles, because the alignment is screwed-up and eating tires or your waddling down the road.

Surprised they want to fix this since the damage was bad enough to knock a rear wheel off. To first order the repair is going to be more or less what the car is worth.

The pictures are too close for an overall assessment along the lines of "is the car bent". It looks like the rear door needs to be replaced, as well as pretty much everything body related in the driver's side rear quarter, probably the hatch too. The gas flap is involved, if that's it, fine, but if the tank is damaged that is stupidly expensive to replace on these cars due to the integrated fuel pump, the crazy rubber bladder, and so on. Since a wheel came off odds are the suspension and brake on that side are mangled. Oddly the bumper does not seem to be bent, or at least not bent much. Did the motorcycle strike in front of the bumper, on the left side, somehow???

Why was there a chainsaw and a rope on the street in the picture from the rear?

 

I bet this is going to be one of those threads that creates lots of questions for us and then OP leaves us hanging never to post a follow up comment again. I also think there was a misunderstanding and once the insurance adjuster looks at the car in person they'll total it rather than repair it.

I'm not following your logic.

If they are willing to pay $9500 for repairs one would assume that they would pay that or somewhat more to total it. If they total it they get the car and you get $10k (round numbers). You could refuse their offer and sell it for parts but by your own estimate that would be at most $2.5k. In some cases the insurer will pay you the total amount and you can buy the car back from them for some amount. If that is less than $2.5k then maybe you can make a few more dollars selling the parts. It probably isn't though as the insurance company also knows what the junk value of your car is and will make you pay at least that much for it. So most likely you come out most ahead financially by just having them total it.

Also, why are they offering so much money? A casual search for similar cars (2004-2007) on Autotrader pulled up 4 near me (San Gabriel valley), in the range $6k to $8.5k, and that's asking price. KBB for a 150k mile car in silver in excellent shape for a private sale is $4.6k - $6.7k, ~$2k less as a trade in. If you can get them to cut you a check for your car for around $10k take it and run.

The 8.5k one has this amusing note:

I wonder how many Harley Davidson riders in the PNW actually keep up on their legally required liability insurance payment in the middle of winter? Pretty crazy to be riding one and splitting lanes during the rainiest and darkest time of the year. Maybe he finally learned his lesson?

Took me a few days to work up the nerve to click all the “yes” buttons on the image postings in initial post. Something not adding up; especially considering the vintage, that is one totalled car.

 

Yeah, I got hit in that same corner, albeit way less severe. Sheet metal pushed in, but not crumpled like yours. Wheel stoved -n slightly, but it stayed on, lol. This was our '10, almost a year past purchase (new), with around 10~15K kms on it. Required new rear axle. Bottom line through our go-to place was $6800~ CDN.
