Red Triangle VSC, ETC Engine Codes: P0010 - Powertrain, P1121 - Powertrain, P0A80 - Powertrain

Techstream: My plan is to make a virtual machine of windows 7 and install techstream on it and buy a vci usb. I downloaded techstream software from the internet and a windows 7 iso.

Battery: I bought a used battery blade off ebay for $25 that the listing said was charged/discharged 5 times and tested. I am going to replace blade #16 in my pack which is showing 6.74 volts from the reading a day after I removed the back.

P0010: I don't think the p0010 code is related but I'll troubleshoot that after I reinstall the pack. I did see that my battery fan has corrosion like other threads have mentioned. My plan is to try to clean that out with some sandpaper folded up.

 

Even I go to that link I see the message "Oops! We ran into some problems.
The requested page could not be found." Can you copy the instructions or share it another way? Thanks. Can you suggest a working vci? I haven't bought one yet.

 

Yep that's my plan for now. I bought 1 used/tested module off ebay but the seller is super slow shipping. If I still have error codes like P0010 after I replace that I'll buy the minivci cable and do a deeper dive.

Hey all, I figured I'd update. So I replaced one module #16 with a used one I got off ebay for $25. The voltage was higher than the rest of the pack so I used a battery tester/loader from Harbor freight for a few seconds to bring it down. The battery appears to be working except it isn't charging as full. I am now tackling P0010 which did not go away.

I checked the VVT today and the wire is COMPLETELY GONE!! I'm not sure where it connects to or how I can fix this. Does anyone have any ideas?

 

Thanks for this but I think my solenoid is fine but the wire is broken at the connection where the other wires are bundled. I'm not sure why I'm unable to post pictures.

 

Ok so I peeled back the part of the wire harness that had the two wires. I peeled back the insulation from all four wires (2 on the connector and 2 on the wire harness) and ran two wires with clips. I turned on the car and NO ENGINE LIGHTS. I read Dr. Prius and NO HV codes or ENGINE codes! I borrowed some connectors and wire and I'm going to make it permanent!

 

I used 2 new wires to reach between the wire harness and the connector. I ended up using 6 butte connectors in total. When I first hooked up the connectors I guess I squeezed too hard. I went to fire up the prius and I got the check engine light. I went back and pulled on the connections and the one that had been squeezed too hard broke so I put a new connector on and everything fired up fine. I took a 10 min drive to get gas since I had 2 blips of 6 month old gas. On my way back I got 49.5 mpg! I It is 27 degrees outside. I drove 65 mph to 45 mph and climbed a hill. I will monitor and update as I drive more!

My plan for tomorrow is to try to solidify the connections. I didn't put the shrink wrap on since I forgot and won't redo the wiring.

 

Hey folks I'm back. So since I drove it about 20 miles in total I have noticed that the power is still lacking. It seems a little worse than it was before the Red Triangle (It's been 6 months and I've drive a number of other cars) but it seems sluggish. The mileage has dropped to around 42 mpg but I have been doing pretty short trips (not unlike my other trips). I believe in the summer I get 46mpg and winter usually 44mpg so not a huge decline.

I have also noticed that my prius is staying on battery power more when I first start the car and drive a little bit. Before I had the orange triangle and check engine light the car would run much quicker than before.

These are just two things I'm noticing. Not sure if it's a big deal. The engine oil is 6 months old and the oil level is down to about half the dipstick. I checked the tire pressure and the back left is leaky. After one day it dropped from 40-> 38. I might add some oil tomorrow and continue testing. I am planning to replace the oil early next week.

Ok so update. My battery had gotten quite hot and I realized my HV battery fan was not running. The white connector on the right side upper part of the trunk had corrosion and was not working. I tested for continuity from the battery fan to the connector and only one of the wires had continuity. I cut the white connector out and hardwired the 4 wires using butte connectors. That fixed the hv fan issue. Now when the battery temp2 gets to about 97-105 it kicks on at fan speed 1 or 2.

 

I had also opened the radiator cap after the engine had been sitting for about 4 hours and some coolant bubbled out. I got error code p1121 and did not have heat. I bought some Toyota Super long life coolant concentrate and mixed with distilled water to get 2 gallons. I added about .5 gallons to the radiator and the overflow. I started the car let it run for about 1 min then shut it of a few times while the cap was open to bleed the system. The heat is back and the coolant is almost full to the top of the radiator when I check in the mornings. I added a bit the past 2 days. Instead of buying a "no spill kit for coolant" from amazon I just cut a 16 oz plastic water bottle in half and used it to fill the radiator. It worked great.

 

It was $33.95 on amazon. The premixed 50/50 was $31ish so I figured I'd get 2 gallons for $35.
