Radio Auxiliary Install?

Guess I'm talking to myself here. 3prongpaul, you may just be a genius, but I don't know whether to slap you because I'm elated or because I'm a little upset. This write up had my feed the 10pin reverse harness into the 12pin connector b/c I thought that is the one you said needed to be fed so I unplugged that one from the radio thinking it was 10pin. I got no MFD and no clock, but I was in a pinch since I had to get to work, so I spent the duration of those couple hours on the clock wondering what the heck I did wrong. And like Chris Knight from Real Genius, in the midst of my preparation for Hari kiri it hit me. YOU CAN SYNTHESIZE BROMIDE IN AN ARGON MATRIX...I digress, But seriously, it couldn't have been any easier, it's just that 3prong, you are awesome for this write up even seven years later, but you didn't explain it well. Yes, his harness works. You NEED 70 and 71 Metra to get this to work so you are basically just adding a kick butt single din all other things remaining equal, namely the clock and info on the mfd. All you have to do is take that harness and the 71 end you just plug in the exact spot that the 70 plugs in. The 70 is a female end 10pin which accepts the 10pin male that you unplug from the radio. The 4pin male goes with the 70 4-pin female. Then the 71 10pin male goes exactly where the 10pin male used to go but you just unplugged it from the radio and into the 10pin female 70 metra. You are only dealing with the 10pin and 4pin NOT the 12pin connector on the radio. Had I known this I would been done the first time I installed the harness not the 3rd or 4th time at 1am, when everything finally made sense. The only reason I kinda figured that las part out was because I took a picture of the 12 pin, and thought, why am I putting a 10pin in a 12pin. Then my second thought was, "Maybe I should try the 10pin in the 10pin, duh. Anywho, I also installed rear speakers today if anyone is interested since I googled long and hard and there was absolutely nothing about replacing the rear speakers in the rear deck for a 2002 prius. Either everyone with an 02 was just born with the ability to do this or no one knows how to do it or the people who do didn't find it helpful to share the info. Well, after going above and beyond and figuring it out myself, ill give you the quick way to do it so you don't end up wasting a ton of time and effort taking out the rear seats like I did. If you wanna access the rear deck speakers, you need to remove the rear deck. To do that you need to remove the cpillars on both sides, just use some mild pry pressure and keep track of the clips so you don't lose any. Then the 3 child car seat clips right behind the rear head rests. There is a little trim cap on each. Take those off and each has a 12mm bolt under it. Remove those, then each seatbelt is easily slid out of a slit in the deck. Pull the deck up a little and slide it toward the front of the car. There you go. Each rear speaker is held on be 3 10mm bolts holding down a horrible paper cone 6.5" speaker. The front door speakers are held down by rivets. Drilling those out is my next project. I don't know why they have to make accessing and modding this stuff so dang difficult. My wife hates me at this point for figuring all this stuff out and not spending as much time with her and the kids, so hopefully this will help someone so they can free up some time using another's experience instead of having to figure it out alone.

Oh and just so you know, I'm legit, I've acutally posted pictures of everything working. The aftermarket single din, the mfd and the clock. I have yet to see one other picture showing everything working as proof that it does work so here it is. The dark picture just shows that the lights work and in the other picture you can see that the clock, aftermarket 1din and mfd all work. The last pic is of the 12 pin on the left side of the radio (if your looking at the radio from the backside). This is the connector you don't even touch. It has nothing to do with anything in this project. You are only concerned with the 10pin and 4 pin so leave the 12 pin in place.

 

The harness I show "splits" the connection from the cars harness to the aftermarket radio and back to the factory radio so touchscreen, clock, illumination etc still work.
You may need to purchase the female connectors

and male connector

to make it all work without your cutting factory wires. Look at the photo earlier in this thread carefully.

 

Thanks 3prong. I got it together last night, though I would've saved a couple bucks had I purchased the scosche harness you show here vs the metra. I did like you said and just removed the glove compartment. That's probably why I messed up the first time putting the 10pin reverse harness into the 12pin female. Until I figured out that it just goes where the 10pin that I removed from the radio used to be. Main thing is it works. It's hard when you can totally see everything. But it works and thank you for your help.

What is "it" that you're going to plug in?

 

A single din deck

 

No. You cannot just plug it in to the CD harness. It just doesn't even work that way. If there's a separate CD player, it's not even wired or set up to function as a head unit (your single din deck).

The master of aftermarket head unit install is Crutchfield. They sort of have different levels of you can/can't do this. It's like "no problem, here's the kit and instructions and a tech support #. Piece of cake." Then there's "you can do this, but it's pretty much a pain, but we'll help you." Then there's "not recommended, but ok, give it a whirl, and we'll help you." Then there's a "just don't do it." The Gen1 Prius is a "just don't do it." The electronics are all incredibly highly integrated.

This is why I ended up with the GROM unit which is actually designed to plug into the CD harness - like on purpose.

 

If you don't mind having a head unit where the CD player (or storage Pocket) was it's not a big deal to install, just start at the beginning of this thread for tips etc. We install aftermarket radios all the time in Gen1's. If you don't have the CD player, the mounting brackets for the new radio are hard to find. I have brackets for sale, $25 shipped for a set to fit any 1DIN high radio.

 

Sorry to dig this out of the archives, but I just finished my install of a JVC head unit with the harness as detailed by @3prongpaul. Everything works great with the key on, but the radio forgets the last state (station, volume, time) when I turn the key off. Odd thing is, it keeps the station memory assignments & EQ adjustments.

Could it be the memory & key-on power are reversed (no matter what the colors would indicate?

check out the GROM TOYOA1 adapter. Just plugs into the CD player harness. I hooked a bluetooth aux adapter into it, does everything I need now. Music and calls in the car no problem.

 

I appreciate the input, but I really like the aftermarket deck. Just annoying g to get blasted w/ static nearly every time I get in the car.

I've got a new Aux 12v battery (not an Optima tho), but was only measuring ~12.7v on the yellow line. Maybe the deck is really picky about voltage?

 

Yeah getting blasted with static would suck. The grom part i mentioned doesnt do that either, fortunately.

 

Thanks a ton for explaining how you did the aftermarket speakers. I also googled hard and this was the best thing I have found. I think I should be able to replace all 4 speakers now, planning on using Kicker 46CSC674 model speakers. Crutchfield really came in clutch with those. They are about 100 watt RMS I think (300 max). I also want to install a 12 inch Scar Subwoofer on my 2001, but not sure how to do the wiring for an amp and all that stuff, any ideas?
