Full on intake, egr, throttle cleaning

Check out the @NutzAboutBolts video for inverter coolant change. IIRC after fill you put it in ready, but just for a matter of seconds, to cycle inverter coolant pump, then shut down, before engine kicks in.

 

Here is some visual aid on the both circuits coolant replacement, maybe it was already mentioned here, apology if it was.

 

You just fill the inverter, put the car in ready, without starting the engine and it will
turn the inverter motor on. Then add to the fill line. But fill the engine coolant first!

For the engine coolant. FILL IT VERY, VERY SLOWLY! Put in a cup or two, wait 10-15
seconds, fill again. Continue like that until the coolant is at the "B" line.
Ready the Prius, wait for the engine to run and stop on it's own. Wait 5 minutes or so and
check where the coolant level is. I fill it just above the full line, because it's right at the
seam for the two half's of the tank. Which is hard to read.

Then drive ti around the block for 5-10 minutes. Park on level ground and check the next day.

I've changed the coolant 4 or 5 times and filled like that and never hard a problem.

 

There’s an engine coolant air release vent, white cap above EGR.

 

Yes, all you should have to do is open this up and fill until you see coolant dripping out. Then close it.

 

You open the bleed valve up when you begin filling the coolant. You will hear air coming out of the valve until the coolant level reaches the valve and it starts to drip out.

You can actually leave the valve open after starting if you want, to assist in bleeding. To do this you would need a clear vacuum hose, and zip tie it to the hood. You can watch the bubbles bleeding out of the system as the car runs, if you are so inclined. But it isn't super important on these cars.

Make sure to shut it when you are done filling.

 

Spark plugs are simple. Need a 10mm to remove the coils, and then a deep 14mm to remove the plugs.

DON'T do what I did and try to use a normal 5/8" spark plug socket. They are 14MM!! I was dumb and got my normal plug socket stuck in the plug well. I'd never seen a 14mm plug before.

It is probably a good starting point anyway; the apps shown as having active test ability for Gen 2 are probably likely to have the same ability if they support Gen 3.

So far, nobody has sent mr_guy_mann a Gen 3 Prius to test on so he could post similar Gen-3-specific reviews.

 

Open vent before you start pouring in the coolant. Air escapes as you add coolant. Once coolant comes out steady close vent. Fill coolant to B line on reservoir, cap reservoir, run engine in maintenance mode till fans come on. In my experience I just shut down after about 20 min; fans never came on.

 

There's no vent on the 2014, he said he also has/had a 2010 as well, but he's currently working on a 2014.

Our 2011 doesn't have a vent, but I had no problem filling the coolant after draining it for EGR cooler , EGR valve, and intake manifold cleaning.

Take the time you need. It is much better to be a couple days late getting it running, than getting it running on time and then having to open it up again! Good work sir

 

Yeah, they removed the vent valve from that tee without changing the part number, so even if you have a 2010 and you buy the current replacement part, it'll be one without a vent valve. They also made that change without adding any extra steps to the refill procedure in the manual; they just removed the steps that mentioned the vent. One infers they don't expect you to have any problem without it.

If no vent gizmo present, you can just leave one of the small, topmost hoses disconnected while filling. Leave cap off reservoir too.

 

Although you might note that absolutely no such instruction was added to the repair manual at the time that the part was changed and the instructions about it were removed, and Toyota expects their own dealers won't have any trouble filling systems just by doing what the instructions say.

 

Well lets just call it akin to crossing your fingers? Can't hurt, might help?
