    Hi !
Head gasket job in process here. i attached back the cylinder head with the head bolts….I used permeate optimum red because that’s what the guy at the car parts suggested and it does high temps. But now in googling im finding that maybe it should have been ultra black.

Opinions: worth taking out everything and restarting from scratch just to change seal packing? Or just continue and don’t use this seal packing anywhere else (timing chain cover and camshaft housing)? Keeping fingers crossed that it’s not that big a deal

A quick Google search shows it is made for exhaust connections. I can't say it won't work, but it's definitely a great example why you should never consult the guy at the parts store for any reason ever.

I saw that too, was afraid to say anything.

open it up again? What’s gasket masters again, Permatex Ultra Black? Watch their video, the cab parking lot for example. It’s not Toyota specd, but it seems to be working. Much longer cure time, 24 hour to first use. Which is good, you’re not racing, say with valve cover.

I called a toyota dealership and asked 3 different mechanics; they said it isn't ideal but it won't break the engine or anything. Says it isn't worth reopening and will very unlikely cause any problems. I bought the ultra black for the rest :p
