Winter tires?

Any idea with 205/65/16 how much ground clearance you have? I am planning to get 205/65/16 also, just worry that it won't fit.

 

Ground clearance on stock tires is 6". You new tires would have about 0.2" smaller diameter so your ground clearance would be 5.8" instead of 6". On rough first glance looks like it would fit fine.

 

I've been running 16's for a month now
No issues. A little tight by the front calipers but they clear.

That would only drop the axle by 0.1 inch.

I was going to reply the same as above, that it is only a 0.2” smaller diameter, so ground clearance should be about 0.1” less on spec based on radius; however I suspect in reality it may be a fraction or two lower than that in real life, given the 65% profile sidewalls will be less rigid than the 50% profile and therefore the body may sit ever slightly lower.

But we are talking very small amounts here that are likely imperceptible to the driver… I like that this tire size seems about the closest to the OEM diameter without maintaining original size, therefore minimal impact on speedometer/odometer.

 

For your 16" package, is it 16x6.5 with 45mm offset?

There’s significant od variation between stock 17” and 19” too.

 

They are 16x6.5”, but 40mm offset. They are compatible with the vehicle according to Costco. Below are the full specs from the website.

 

One missing stat that seems critical: the inside diameter of the main portion of the rim, the bit that has to clear the calipers.

It'd be cool to have some kinda caliper, that bolts onto the wheel lugs, has a calibrate arm that extends out, and a right-angle inward leg at the end of the arm, so you could measure the "radius" of the caliper shoulders.

IIRC one guy's currently rolling on 16" rims, and they worked but the inner hidden weights needed to be shiffted; they were brushing.

I'm reassured by the member in BC (jbbass, if i remember right) whose costco ewheels rims are working well... because I ordered the same rims.

 

Yeah caution the tire shop about hidden weight placement, mount and spin, verify clearance. And especially if it's costco, and your snows are directional, double check they mount so you've got two lefts and rights. They're batting zero with me: two times I've got (directional) X-Ice from them they've screwed it up.

 

These are 215/50/18 Michelin X-Ice tires mounted on Scion TC wheels I picked up on marketplace. I was even able to use stock lugnuts from my 4Runner to mount them instead of the gunmetal lugnuts that came on the Prius.

 

Thanks for the info. Does the Center Bore size matters? or as long as is bigger than 60.1 than it should be fine?

 

If the center bore is larger than OEM, you will need hub centric rings.

 

I'm going to pull the pin on some winter tires today and here is what I'm looking at.
215/60R17
The stock tires on my limited in Canada are 26. 68 diameter and these 17's i listed above are 27.2 Does anyone think this would be in issue? I would like to go slightly taller than shorter due to winter ground clearance up here. Also with the tires being slightly wider would there be any issues inside the wheel wells with turning etc?

 

Well, I got my 16” steel rims with 205/65R16 Michelin x-Ice yesterday, and it’s a great fit and good (albeit noticeably softer) ride.

The 16’s do clear the calipers fine, however it is certainly the smallest rim size that will fit, as the front calipers are very close, probably within 1/4”, but no contact. (Couldn’t fit my pinky finger between them…)

I opted for the aftermarket “clone” sensors the Toyota dealer was recommending, and although they told me the tire pressure location feature isn’t supported with these, the car DOES seem to recognize it, which is great. They “clone” the IDs so nothing needs to be changed in the car and it will automatically recognize the wheels on the car… they filled the pressure in my snow tires to 35/36 vs my alloys that were at 32/33, so right now it is easy to tell which tires it is picking up. I noticed the car seems to recognize the rims about 15’ away, if I park in the driveway with the rims stacked in the garage; I can watch the pressure measurements flipping between 32/33 and 35/36 if I sit in the car in the driveway. You can see in the pic where it was reading 3 of the sensors on the mounted rims, but one of the alloys in my hatch. Yeah, if I stored them at the dealer or somewhere else, it would be a non-issue, but I only have a townhouse with limited storage options, LOL.

I did remind the dealer that the new Prius supports TWO sets of IDs, but they said “that only works with the OEM sensors”… but I figure they are probably misinformed on this as well, since they were wrong about the car not identifying pressures by tire, lol. Since the IDs on the sensors are clearly updatable (to match the OEM sensors), why can’t they just set them to different IDs and program them in the other memory slot?

Anyway… I can absolutely confirm now that this size fits and works great.

 

Thank you for confirming this.. I am ordering a set of steel rims from Costco now, seems like they are the only one have this size...

 

Who supplied those, ie are they no-name, fits-all, or a specific Toyota steel rim with part number? Dealership supplied, or?

 

Got them from Costco, they are “universal”, but hubcentric and tagged to fit the 23 Prius, and it does. Re-sharing the screenshot, see attached.
