Winter tires?

I don't have such a device. I've driven decades without tire pressure sensors so not super concerned. The tire pressure light being on all the time is a bit annoying. I guess black tape if it bugs.
The dealer wants to charge me to try and sync it up but admitted it might not hold.

Yeah, I tried several times to program the new sensors. It doesn't work. Even the dealer tried.
I was going to see if Schwab near me can do it.

I purchased a set of these for my second set of wheels. Followed procedure in manual for pairing second set. Worked as expected.

If yours is still failing, I'd still quiz a real tire shop.

 

Right, but that needs a newer type of sensor. The new Prius still needs OBD programming for the older type of sensor, and it's possible that's what Blackat has - if they're Toyota-compatible at all.

 

The sensors I bought were part of the TireRack package and not from Toyota. The jist I got from the dealer is they are not compatible or if they did do the progamming it has a high likelyhood of not holding.
I'll see what the tire shop has to say.

picked up Michelin Ice-x Snow at Kipling tire in Toronto. $720 plus tax, wheels were a little more than other places at $170 each but mounted and installed is $1683 after tax. I'll have them put them on probably mid November

 

So what size tires and wheels did you go with? 205/65/16s on 16" rims or something different? Guessing you DIDN'T take the tpms?

I have an appointment booked there for late October.

 

Yes, the 205/65/16 on I think evo rims at 170 a piece. Didn't bother with TPMS but they can order them from Toyota. Not worried about colour of the rims as the ones I have now are both silver and black.

 

Thanks! It puts my mind at rest about the set of 16" silver coloured rims I have sitting in the basement waiting to have rubber put on them...

 

Broken record: before taking the plunge and having tires mounted, trial install the rims, front and rear? Keep in mind the adhesive style hidden weights are about 4 mm thick too.

One of the other members, jbbass, ordered the same set of wheels from Costso that I did, and has confirmed that they fit on his car by mounting them.

I realize that not all 16" wheels are the same... but if they fit that car, confident they'll fit mine.

 

Yeah I wonder how much variation there can be on inside diameter.

 

Hey all, haven’t checked in here for a few weeks, so thought I would provide an update -

I went to my local dealer earlier this week to quote on snow tires, and they interestingly had a package for 16” steel rims with Firestone 205/65R16 (and “aftermarket” steel rims), so I guess that confirms 16” will fit. I actually ordered and received some 16x6.5” steelies from Costco on sale a few weeks ago (thanks again @Nntw !) , but haven’t tried a fit test yet.

After thinking about it a few days, I pulled the trigger today and put the order in, and paid a bit more to get Michelin x-Ice instead of Firestone. Total cost including taxes was CAD$1382, which includes the x-Ice tires, “clone” (aftermarket) tire sensors another set of smaller wheel nuts which better fit the steel rims (and keep the nice black alloy nuts out of the salt) and all labour / programming fees, on the steel rims I already have (which I paid CAD$282). So, all in it is about $1664 and handled by Toyota, so no concerns about TPMS issues or anything like that (was burned on that last time… will only buy TPMS sensors from the place doing the install going forward to ensure they are responsible to make it work!).

I think the overall price and low risk is decent. They also have a loyalty program where I am getting about $250 in credits toward my next vehicle, for whatever that’s worth…. (It will be a while! lol)

Apparently the clone sensors don’t report individual tire location like the OEM sensors (?), but I guess we’ll see… the OEM sensors would have been about $150 more or so, which would be hard to justify… will report back how it works, but in the unlikely case it does not, they will be responsible to fix it.

Install scheduled for Oct 24.

 

I realize this is a reply to a somewhat older post. However, I bought a set of 16" alloy rims and Blizzak 205/65-16 inch tires from Tirerack.com

 

205/55/17 is the ideal size for the stock 17x6.5 wheels on the SE. However ground clearance will reduce to 5.2".

You can also run 215/55/17 on the stock 17" wheel, 215 is the max width you can run on a 6.5" width. Ride height will be at 5.6" with that size.

205/60/17 is also a good size, but the only available choice is the Blizzak Lm001 which isn't a great dedicated winter tire, it's more of a cold weather tires, ice performance is average and I heard it's very loud.

I opted for 225/50/18 Pirelli ice zero asimmetrico on 18x8 et35. Mainly because I wanted to buy a dedicated winter wheel set, the 18's were barely more expensive than a set of 17x7/215/55/17 and the 225/50/18 will increase ground clearance to 6.2". Haven't test fitted them yet, but a member of the gen 5 Facebook group is running that exact setup for summer on enkei Rpf1's and he claims it works without rubbing.
