2023 Prius Ltd Awd MPG

    Wouldn’t all of this been taken into consideration before Toyota advertised the estimated mpg? I know the Gen 2 estimate was higher than the typical drivers average but not by much.

    @Mr.Sooner how much over 40mpg were you getting in your 2010? My gauge on my 2009 reads between 45 and 48 mpg. In general did Gen 3 have lower fuel economy?

    The second XLE Prius I test drove had 45 miles on it and was registering 27 mpg. I know it takes some mileage to start showing accurate figures and a salesperson could have been testing out acceleration.

    That darn Prius is still on the lot.

    What many don't understand is that the EPA estimates for MPG were arrived at under controlled conditions. It wouldn't be that hard for anyone to drive aggressively and get only 30-35 MPG. Also, I would not rely on the car gauges; the most accurate reading will always be manually calculating miles driven / gallons used on every tank. The gauges are useful to give you an approximate idea of how you are driving.

    No…this is the one with the issues. Mostly the wind noise on drivers side window that I was concerned about. I had a noise in another car…they typically don’t go away. I’m more sensitive than the average person although I don’t mind the engine noise and will get used to the tire noise.

    I’m mostly concerned about it still being there because it could affect the next allocation too. It’s out if my hands. Maybe I’m meant to get a 2024. We’ll see.

    How often/far are you driving?
    Do you have any bad habits, say sit idling with AC off?
    Mostly around town or highway, typical speeds?
    Hopefully not doing a paper route, lol...

    They claim 51mpg with this package. Moving from my 13 year old Prius getting 41 to this getting 36 is surprising I drive it the same

    I was getting 40-43 on my 2010. I would be happy getting 40 in this new one. Considering 51mpg advertised claim.

    That's a very important confession. The older Prii limited the fuel economy damage you could do by having no power. Bad habits in the G5 could be more costly. Hard braking being one of the biggest hybrid driving sins.

    That's a real killer in the Prius, no matter the generation. The only tip is to try and drive to your furthest destination first, then work your way back.

    My 2010 base model would typically get around 35-38 on the same trips, so I'm still calling it a win. I was just trying to show the realistic worst-case. The heaviest Prius HEV doing the worst type of driving.

    I have currently an ICE and buy a G5 so I can have bad habits without feeling too bad about fuel economy. Braking much more will be probably the most enjoyable part. Now I barely dare to brake.

    Data point: Just made a roughly 60 mile round trip with a couple minimal stops at the midpoint. 88-90 degree ambient temp with the A/C on and set to 75. 5-10mph crosswind. Very gentle upslope on the way out, same downslope on the return. Cruise set at the speed limit of 60mph(wanted to go slower, but it was a reasonably busy two-lane road and I didn't want to hold up traffic below the speed limit). 53mpg average for the trip.

    Hi!
    New here but thought I'd throw in my numbers.

    I picked up my Limited AWD in June.

    Currently I have 5500 miles on it. YIKES.

    However, I'm not seeing the lower numbers of others. I have to drive like a real a-hole to get anywhere less than 55mpg. (well per the car)

    I attached my readouts. Yes, the weather was pristine. Hah. But I was at 61.3 at over 200+ miles on the tank. The other 63 with 50 miles on the tank.

    My last car was a 2019 Insight....which could also get these numbers. So I don't think this Prius is stellar on gas or anything.

    It sucks the with how sleek it is...it doesn't just slip through the air! Hah

    Notes on my daily drive....most is single-lane highway. I rarely use cruise control (DESTROYS FE). I do use climate if needed but I also drive all a lot with windows down for my pup in the back. Hah. I also am not a lead foot. Maybe that is the difference?

    Anyway, I love reading about how we all love our cars. I have only seen 2 other 2023s in my area since I bought mine so still rare!

    ....just to add. Even with high mileage...I only get like 500~ miles out of a tank. Not sure how someone said 650 miles while only averaging 40s or 50s?
    Is there a secret back up tank somewhere? Hah

    When I fill up I usually add between 7-8 gallons.

    Bought mine in mid-June.

    Pretty typical tank average for me:

    I reset my trip info history page after every tank:

    If I drive super conservatively I can hit around 55 on the trip home from work:

    But maintaining this is impractical, especially as any trips on the highway (which I do fairly frequently) will demolish the average.

    I'm envious of folks who live in regions with straighter/flatter roads and don't have to hit a highway for 40 mins just to go to a nice restaurant.

    Unfortunately, the roads where I live do not give this car much opportunity to operate in EV mode for very long. I live in a region that's all hills, where roads follow ridgelines (mostly) and there's a lot of up-and-down motion. It basically has to keep the engine firing to maintain speed up inclines, with very few stretches of flat level road. If it helps, the image above of that drive home was with me maintaining around 55mph highway speeds, maximum of ~60, and being mindful not to make too much of a point of hitting the accelerator to maintain high speeds.

    If anything, I've found that eco-mindful driving vs 'normal' driving doesn't really matter too much out here when I'm driving on a sine wave either way (as long as I'm not going full lead-foot mode). Hitting >90 on the eco score out here is seriously a real chore, and I've never been able to get higher than 95 on a single trip. You should see that white guideline on the eco score page, it's basically constantly sweeping left and right the whole ride.

    At the crest of the hill you should be able to ICE off then glide down the backside. Are you able to pulse over the speed limit on the way down and let the next hill eat away at the momentum? Or is the route twisty with low visibility?

    I've tried that, but the momentum disappears near instantly on inclines and I end up having to rev pretty high just to get up most of the hills anyway.
    The roads are somewhat twisty, but I've been on worse. It's mainly just the constant up-and-down that makes for sub-optimal conditions to take advantage of momentum.

    I was actually giving that another try this morning on the way to work, and got this:

    EV ratio increased, but the extra work I had to make the car do to make up for the constant momentum loss pretty much negated any benefits that would've had.

    It's worth noting that 49-55 MPG on these kinds of roads is still quite respectable for a car that's only rated for 49 to begin with, even if it's an absolute chore to achieve. It's just not the "near infinite" mpg that other people seem to be capable of getting with theirs (on presumably more optimal roads).

    And more importantly, where tank averages are concerned -- any time I have to get on the parkway to the next town over (which is a 40-minute drive one way, at 70+ MPH, with constant up-and-down driving and much longer slopes to traverse), which I do at least once or twice every week, it completely demolishes my mileage, as the best I can get under those conditions is around 38mpg.
