Swapping in a Gen 4 Prius' 2ZR Engine into the Prius v

    Curious what might be the range(s) for this option, and what was actually rebuilt or replaced?

    Uncle says it was knocking prior to him changing his oil. I sent him videos of other prius knocking. " yeah thats it ! " Drove about half mile to gas station noticed oil leaking. Drove back home and huge puddle in street. Gasket incorrectly placed. Weird thing oil is super red almost like trans fluid. Heavy fuel scent. Coolant bottle wasn't empty id say half inch drop from what I remember could be less when I last checked. Id always check see if its eating coolant.

    I was thinking of saving motor and put new head gasket. What do I need to check to see if its worth keeping?

    I have a 2013 Prius V with a shot engine. We don't want a new car, we want a new engine for our current car. The Dealership can only find a junked engine with 58K miles on it and they want an exorbitant amount to put it in. Maybe the answer is modifications to install a newer generation engine. We'll pay a reasonable amount, but we want a new engine. Does anyone know anyone who could do this for us? We live in Maryland, but we'll travel to get it done. We love this car and we just got new brakes and tires. Thanks.

    What's the miles on your shot engine? Did you ever clean the EGR passages, including those in the intake manifold?

    Would be good to do in conjunction with an engine swap.

    Just swap on JDM engine . Gen 4 or 3 similar cost. A few things have to be done to get the Gen 4 in there and working properly but it's not game changing me personally I stuck with a Gen 3 no problem about the $800 swap out in the North Carolina area I have a brother in Maryland It would cost three times that in Maryland.

    Dragon, If you are willing to travel, there are places you can go. In Florida there is a place (they also sell rebuilt Prius's) and here in SoCal we have Hybridpit in Buena Park California. I would call them and tell them your situation. They may be able to help. They either ship or install complete rebuilt Gen III engines.

    Thanks for getting back with me. The current engine has about 175K on it. We don't have the ability to do the work ourselves and the dealership only gave us the option of the switch out with the used 58K engine. We're wondering if there are any shops or mechanics you or someone else might know that could advise us and do the work for us. It's actually driving OK most the time, so I think we could travel out of state to drop it off. It is gradually losing coolant, though, and the dealership said it's likely a blown gasket. The replacement cost for the gasket does not make sense given the age of the engine.

    Thanks. That sounds fine if we can get a new engine and someone to do it for us. Doesn't have to be Gen 4, unless it's more sensible in the long run.

    An engine swap or a transmission and engine swap in this model like a Corolla is ridiculously easy two three hours the engine and transmission assembly is sitting on the ground next to your car and you're bolting up pieces making the next assembly ready to drop in setting it down pushing up the drive axles to the transmission hooking up the hoses and so on and so forth is ridiculously easy If you have a bad back and body problems and no lift this can be a serious problem other than that it's pretty straightforward and very easy even if you can only work on it an hour or two at a time with a bad back like me I'm laying on the ground I do not have a lift I have an electric hoist on an A-frame ganyard type setup in the yard I like it outside so on and so forth I don't think I'll ever break down and buy a four post lift.

    Engine out the top by itself is also very possible when the car is on jack stands. Just do yourself a favor and make sure they didn’t come from Harbor Freight.

    Yes I usually come out the top sometimes with the hood off but on the Gen 3 the hood goes so straight up my ganyard electric hoist is sitting right above the car traversing the engine compartment I just hook up the cable to the adjustable chain for my hoist and lift her right up out of there push the car back I don't even need to be on jack stands really. It depends on what kind of prep work I'm going to do to make ready for the new assembly.

    Have a bunch of proprietary spy photos but can't post publicly (yet or ever) with the placement/fitment of water pipes/hoses and electrical connector for coolant temp sensor. Definitely the best upgrade for this car over a Gen 3 Engine. Still trying to break it in and let the computer settle in on MPG as it was rebuilt with new rings, new head gasket, re-manufactured head and many misc. internal parts. To my knowledge, this is the only rebuilt Gen 4 engine in one of our cars in the world maybe (with or without a Version 2 Nexcell Lithium Pack)? Does anyone else rebuild them like Hybrid Pitstop?

    It seems the couple of Gen 4 transplants I've seen here and on YouTube were all "junkyard Gen 4's" where the owner just stabbed in the complete block without a rebuild. This one I have was likely low to moderate mileage and likely overkill to rebuild but I wanted something to last until the rest of the car falls apart. I can try to answer questions in DM. (Car has 109k on it, with a very healthy Gen 3 engine that I sold to someone who had a bad head gasket and oil burning).

    *Anyone running the Gen 4 Swapped engine try using Gen 4 fuel injectors/rail? If so, did mileage increase or decrease? Also, are you all using Gen 4 coil packs? Would like some feedback for tuning purposes.

    OK- just finally read all of the 56 pages of the thread here and watched all of Ragingfit's videos and I think I am ready to do the engine swap on my 2010 Prius. I had 156K miles on the car before the head gasket blew.

    Background: I bought the car in 2018/19 with about 66K miles on it. In the last 2 months, I have been getting progressively worse death rattle on cold starts, occasional bogging down while trying to accelerate and then got a P0301 cylinder 1 misfire code. I took off the intake manifold and EGR pipe for cleaning and that seemed to help a bit but the rattle came back. I then tried cleaning the injectors with no luck. The spark plugs were replaced 3 months ago and swapping the coils had no effect. I stuck a camera down into cylinder 1 and saw some little dibbles of coolant on the cylinder wall, yay. Now I am not a gear head and this is my first time tearing into an engine, but because of all that I'm 99% sure that it's a head gasket leak.

    I found a local JDM place that has a bunch of engines so was thinking of picking one up tomorrow. I hope people are still paying attention to this thread in case I need any help!

    @VasKeZ is your heart set on a gen 4 engine for the transplant? There are nagging overheat issues, and nobody's really resolved why they're happening. If it's gotta be an engine transplant, I'd second a properly rebuilt 3rd gen engine, say through Hybrid Pit Stop, as mentioned by @rjparker.

    Consider too, you could just replace the head gasket.
