16 inch wheels to fit 2023 prime?

Contacted a dealership, or several? That’s a tactic I tried with our new 2010, looking for a 15” steel rim and snow tire combo.

At the time there was no established steel rim compatible. One dealership proposed a Corolla steel rim, they weren’t 100% sure but would verify of course, before committing to mounting and balancing snow tires.

I did the whole thing through them, maybe $100 more than cheaper options, but they handled all eventualities. Worked out fine.

 

The optional space-saving spare wheel for the HEV is 16", and that is available for the AWD. The PHEV brake components have all the same size specifications as the AWD HEV*, with a 12" front rotor.

So there should be no problem fitting a full-size 16" wheel to any G5 Prius variant.

No first-hand experience here though - I'm just reading numbers of the internet...

*(One irrelevant difference: European PHEVs get different front brake pads - NS380H type, rather than VC115. No idea what the difference is.)

 

i asked the dealer about smaller wheels for our 2024 hycam. they said it was too new to get any information.
i said they've been making this generation for 5 years.
they said...crickets

and i ordered these for myself. supposed to be hub centric, oem compatible, suitable for winter etc etc

 

The reason for the "tactic": I first contacted the parts department of the dealership we bought from, and the parts manager said that the Prius was a "flagship" vehicle, there were no steel rims available. That's when I got motivated. found another dealership with some common sense.

@jbbass you're in a small town, maybe just one Toyota dealership, and it's quite a drive. But hopefully as autumn sets in owners in larger cities, in particular in the snow belt, will get helpful responses from dealerships, they'll trial fit rims (say Camry, RAV4), and chime in here.

 

Yeah.... I ordered c-wheels from costco last weekend (they were on sale! )but am waiting to see if any local Toyota dealer offers a reasonable package. My kids will be using this car a fair bit, so I'd prefer to have a package I know someone at Toyota approved. But if it's too exorbitant, , it'll be the 16" rims with 205/65/16 michelins from a local shop.... and most likely no tpms.

 

Will the 5th gen recognize two sets of TPMS now, and allow swaps without needing dealership intervention (every blessed time...)? I thought I read something like that here.

Definitely NOT the case with 3rd gen. I eschewed the TPMS sensors; didn't take much thought to make that decision. Comical anecdote (which I've likely repeated at least 10 times here...):

At the "enlightened" dealership that volunteered to test-fit Corolla steel rims, the mechanic asked if I wanted TPMS sensors, while silently shaking his head "NO", lol.

 

My 2014 Pilot had winter tires, and tpms- the dealer offered a really good package price.

Considering I was transporting the whole family unit (and don't like checking tire pressures at the best of times, never mind winter) I was glad I went that way.

And then i replaced the Pilot with a Rav4prime (my other unicorn) which didn't have tpms.

Clearly I've survived.... but I still have fond memories of the indirect system on my 2005 Sienna AWD.

 

Our son's Mazda CX-5 has in-tire TPMS sensors, in two sets of wheels/tires. It could be the dealership, when they installed the snow tire set, had to do an initial introduction, but since then (and it's detailed in the owner's manual), simply swapping the wheels and driving a bit, the car recognizes the swap, no problem.

 

I ordered some of these 16x6.5” steel rims and received them a few days ago, still sitting in cardboard boxes. One day soon (maybe this weekend?) I intend to jack the car up and try a fit test to be sure (and I will take some pics with the clearance and share), but I don’t expect there to be a problem.

Worst case though… they are Costco, they take anything back.

You can drill down and compare actual diameter and revolutions per mile with different size tires, i.e. site will calculate what tire size needed to give you same revolutions per mile with 16" wheel on a car designed for 19" wheel.

I'm also interested if anyone has successfully installed 16" Toyota wheels onto a Gen5 Prius and which ones worked.

Low profile tires may look cool, but hit a pothole and you'll destroy the tire. And regular profile tires are usually cheaper than low profile tires.

 

If you have a car that only allows 1 set of TPMS data and you want a "winter" set of wheels, find a tire shop that installs Autel TPMS sensors, we use them at our shop and CLONE the factory sensor IDs, this means when you switch your wheels seasonally you don't need to reprogram / sync the car to wheels if your car only has a data bank for sensor IDs

Just ask your tire installer to install your "customer supplied" sensors into your additional set of wheels.

 

I just put 16" wheels with Blizzaks on mine.

Did you use Toyota or aftermarket wheels? Please share details as well as tire size you went with.

 

would you be concerned about wheels with a 35mm offest? your source says 38-42

205/65/16. They are the same diameter as the stock 19 wheels/tires
