The default warranty I have on my Prius is 3 years or 36,000 miles. I have an option of extending it to 7 years or 100,000 miles with the Platinum Toyota Extra Care option, for ~$1500. Has anyone gotten it and used the service? What do you guys think?
It's a gamble whether you use it or not. I got one for my refrigerator and used it. I got one for my camcorder and didn't need it. I had one (3rd party) for my last car that was worthless. If you want the piece of mind, get it. I'm planning to. Two things about it... You do NOT have to get it right away. You have until the original warranty is about to end. You do NOT have to pay that much. You can get it for about $990 here on PC.
I got my dealer to come down sinificantly on the price of the platinum 7/75k because I knew they were anxious to sell it to me. I still paid more than the PC deal (mostly because I didn't know about it until too late!) but I don't mind the difference because over 7 years, the peace of mind alone I think is worth it, and it may well pay for itself.
First off, that's too much money. You can the exact same warranty here for less. Second, as stated above, you have 3 years or 36,000 miles to decide. I bought it for peace of mind. That was when I planned to keep the car for at least 10 years. Now I've decided to buy the newly redesigned Gen III when it comes out. So...do you think you *might* trade your car in for a 2009 Prius (fall 2008) when the new models come out? If you do....don't bother with the warranty as you'll be replacing your car within three years.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Godiva @ Jul 26 2006, 07:53 PM) </div> The extended warranty is transferable when you sell the car, so it might be worth going for a 'private sale' when it's near the time to get your Gen III, Godiva - it should add to the sale price, and a private sale will likely be worth more than the trade-in.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Jeannie @ Jul 26 2006, 07:06 PM) </div> I know that. I also have HOV stickers. I'll make a decision at the last minute. We'll see what the dealer will offer and I'll check private sales in my area through Yahoo and KBB. If the HOV lane access is extended beyond 2008 I think having stickers for my car will make it highly desirable. The extended warranty....not so much.
Need help all! I've posted here regarding my cancelation of my Plantinum plan. Advise Needed! Thanks!
Well I'll throw in my 2 cents worth, or $990 as the case may be. Extended warranties are insurance policies, but unlike auto or homeowners insurance they are not tightly regulated by your state. There are quite a few posts here by people who found things that were not covered by these warrantys. Sometimes they try to sleaze out of things they say they will cover because they have more lawyers than you do. Here is a recent topic on the subject: http://priuschat.com/index.php?showtopic=22903&hl= So if you think you want it at least wait until your 3 year/36K is about to run out. Then buy it here because you won't beat this price anywhere. My personal rule is "don't buy extended warranties on anything ever." I have never bought one and have most likely saved enough money by now to fix anything that breaks. Think how much good that $990 could do in your Roth IRA. It's a gamble, if you buy an extended warranty you are betting the car will break expensively and the people who sell it to you are betting that it won't. If I though the car was going to have expensive problems I wouldn't have bought it to start with.

If he does, then his MFD is covered. If has a lesser warranty, all bets are off. In the US, only the platinum warranty is available for the Prius.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Eco Bunny 2 @ Jul 26 2006, 04:15 PM) </div> Buy it from the dealer in MA who advertizes the Toyota Platinum Warranty here on PriusChat, 7/100K, no deductable, for $990. I bought mine and it arrived last week. It's the same warranty the dealer wants $1850 MSRP. Probably nothing will break on the car, but I will sleep well at night! 2006 Blue #8
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Eco Bunny 2 @ Jul 26 2006, 04:15 PM) </div> The battery and other components of the Hybrid system are covered longer, so if you are worried about them, remember that in California you have 7 or 8 years or 100,000 miles on those components.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Eco Bunny 2 @ Jul 26 2006, 04:15 PM) </div> It looks like you're in California, so the hybrid battery and other components are warranted for 10 years/150,000 miles (in most other states it's 8 years/100,000 miles). I have a 2004 and got the extended warranty, but two big reasons were the display that could go out (I was in the VIN range for the suspect ones), and the fact that 2004 was the first model year of a redesign. Even with Toyota, the first year of a new model ALWAYS has more problems. If I were buying a 2006, I most likely would not get the warranty. Because I drive a lot of miles, I got the 6-year/100,000-mile/$0 deductible from Troy here for $875. (7/100,000/0 is currently $990). It gives me peace of mind, even though I might never have to use it (and I paid for side airbags and stability control hoping that I'd never have to use those either....).

Most of it is returned at the end of the warranty period if I don't use it, and if I do have any major problems I am covered.
