Wondering if there's been any update. I'd like to have a 2nd Prius key but dealer fees are pretty stiff. Anyone figured an easier way to program a new key?
What part of Florida? I have the xtool D8 that will program the key. I've never done it, but it isn't too hard. It will write you through it.
I think this is pretty straight forward, you buy a key, new or used. A used one, you have to wipe it's memory to make it a "virgin" new key again. Then program with techstream or similar software.
You might find my recent post helpful: 2023 Update on Key Replacement Cost | PriusChat TL;DR - Bought an aftermarket fob and found a local alarm installer who added the key. Only regret is that the aftermarket fob has a chipped battery retention clip which causes the fob to periodically lose battery contact; just had to add a spacer to keep in place. Returning the fob would require ANOTHER programming at the alarm shop.
What is the similar software that can program a key? I can buy a blank easily enough, will make sure it's got the same numbers as my original key.
The similar type software is whatever is usually pretty sophisticated ones used by professionals, this would include the techstream that Toyota uses that's over $2000
This whole techstream thing is totally over my head. II called Tampa Bay Hybrids, they sell you a key and program it for $140. Looks like that's the easiest thing to do. We are down there monthly to see my mom, so we can swing in without much trouble.
Well, for $140, it's good enough to solve my problem. I need to get ready to focus on EGR valve and manifold cleaning. I know I'm going to fumble with that for a couple of days .
Locksmiths have machines that can deal with these fobs and keys I don't know all the names of the machines but it only has to do with the key fob SKS transponder business and the like I had to have this done for my motorcycle very similar to the SKS system
