2023 2nd key fob ?

Still waiting on ours. 5mo and counting.

 

Has anyone from the latest allocation (deliveries this week from the latest shipment) gotten 2 Fob’s?

I keep reading that the 2nd fob will be getting sent to customers around late august or so.
My prime should be here in a few days and am hoping.

I am not looking forward to the added stress of just 1 fob if that’s the case for now.

Edit: if you do lose your one and only fob how SOL are you? Are there any fobs available anywhere to buy as a replacement or to just buy a 2nd one? If so how much??

 

supposedly, we got 2 key fobs with our 2024 hycam. but when the delivery guy showed up last thursday, he said he forgot one, and would mail it. i'm still waiting, and they're waiting for their review.

 

They can’t mail it. You have to get a service appointment so they can use your key in the enabling procedure.

My rav4 took ten months for the second key plus an hours wait at the dealer.

 

Tow the car in and wait a couple of days for the fob.

 

Of course they can mail it to you. You just bring it to your local dealer and have it programmed just like any other car.

That’s precisely what I don’t want to have to do. I like the fact that my wife has a second key fob either in her purse or at home safe and sound that can be picked up in a worst-case scenario. So hopefully my car comes with two. If not, we shall see.

I am still waiting on second key fob. I put in request for information when my car was delivered with one, at beginning of July. Was told it would be end of summer. I just put in another request for support through Toyota website. I am beginning to become pretty annoyed with this as I really don't think it is a chip shortage issue any more.

I suggest all owners of Toyota's delivered with one key fob put in support requests. The more they begin to realize they are losing customer good will on a stupid issue, the more likely they are to deliver.

I have never lost a car key, but if this is the first, before they deliver, my annoyance level will grow exponentially (it is a logarithmic scale).

 

Sounds like thy're available. Dealers need a supply on hand for those that do lose one.

True. But it is now just a few months from 2024. Plenty of time for Toyota to make this right. It is just not a priority and I think it would become more of one if customers make more noise. The excuse was ok during a supply choked pandemic. That is over, has been over for a while.

 

See the first few comments in this link for references to some YouTube videos that show a Toyota memo for when to expect a 2nd key fob and the procedure for getting it. Some recent updates indicate that Toyota is falling behind schedule by a few weeks.

Keys are being released in phases that depend on the model and date it was manufactured (visible on the plate in the front door opening). For example, my Prius was manufactured in March 2023. So, I am in Phase 4. So, my 2nd key should be available in late 2023.

Toyota has released an updated memo indicating that Phase 2 just met its August deadline, so the schedule may slip a bit. Thus, I am hoping for my 2nd fob in early 2024.

If you have a model eligible for a digital key, getting one would give you some peace of mind. You do need to use your fob to initialize the digital key. If you have the 1-year complimentary Remote Connect subscription, you can use it to handle some functions. However, there is a bit of delay since it does not directly command the car but sends commands to Toyota's server, which then forwards the command to the vehicle.

 

The updated memo is only a couple weeks old, so I'm going to type out the info for the Prius and Prius Primes. From the memo, even Priuses being built right now are still only getting one smart key. Toyota is currently making cars with two different types of smart keys. They've managed to get things fixed with one of the key types, but the other(which the 2023 Prius uses) is still a mess. I'm sure it's down to one semiconductor supplier that is the only producer of the exact needed chip. And getting a new supplier for a particular chip is typically somewhere between expensively difficult to flat out impossible.

So if you just bought a Prius in the last few weeks, you probably won't be getting your second key until Feb or Mar of next year.

 

Good info. Thx. Still is BS only getting 1 Fob but I guess it is what it is. Going off the above chart I will have to wait 4-6 months for my 2nd Fob. Build date 7/20 on mine

About $300 if you are lucky. But Toyota corporate instructed dealers not to sell the emergency stock unless someone loses one. Even then they order it from the Toyota warehouse.

So you might have it towed in and hope they don’t erase your “lost” fob. Normally a no fob reset is required to the immobilizer ecu. With a fob it is easier.

Obviously throwing a tantrum on the sales floor might help or might summon the police.

I would look into the digital key app.

 

$300 would be amazing. Real world Price on a Mercedes Key Fob. The fob $499 the laser cut key blade specific to your vehicle. $108. Programming at the dealership $299. $902 out the door before tax. That is if you own 1 working key already. If you lose all the keys and tow to the dealer. The sales guy said $2,000 without the tow charge. But then again tires for a prius $550. Tires for Mercedes SUV $1,600

 

Blizzard: I'm a bit scared about no second keyfob too. Never lost one, but it wasn't critical before either! I have set up my phone to be a key (with some help from folk on this website), so I at least have a backup if something bad happens. I know all cars don't have that feature, I hope yours does.

Yes, my incoming Prime XSE does have the digital key option.

I am somewhat confused though. I thought the digital key can act as a fully functioning key fob where you can start your vehicle, unlock and lock the doors and fully use it as a key fob. Is this true because someone in another thread said you cannot start the vehicle with it. Digital key seems kind of useless if it’s only to open and close the doors.

I used to own a Subaru outback wilderness that had Starlink and with the app you could start the car, open the doors and lock them and set HVAC. Starlink worked pretty good for the most part, had a couple issues, but it was nice to start the car with it when out of key fob range.

 

There's two halves to Digital Key: Cellular and Bluetooth.

Cellular allows you to start/stop your engine, lock/unlock doors, adjust basic climate controls, turn on/off headlights & hazards, and activate a buzzer/alarm all from anywhere in the world*.

Bluetooth allows the phone to function as a smart key; allowing keyless entry and keyless start.


Both need the Toyota app to be running on your phone and you to be logged into the app. They also need to be initialized, but you only should have to do that once for each half. The car and the app step you through that fairly easily, and most dealers will also help you through it when you take delivery. It's helpful to have the app installed on your phone and create an account before you go to the dealer(if you don't have one already). It just saves time to have that part done in advance.

I find the cellular portion of the app slow to respond, especially the first command you send. This is because the cell receiver in the car needs to wake up out of standby. Once the car's systems are awake, the next commands respond much quicker.

The Bluetooth portion can be finicky to get going, but it always eventually works. And once it's working, it's as seamless as having a regular smart key in your pocket. Just be patient if it doesn't work right away; maybe close the app and restart. (I need to learn the patient part better myself. lol)


*as long as both you and the car are within range of a compatible cell tower.
