I felt the same about the air pillar in my other Prius even though the angle wasn’t as extreme. I just always double check before turning as a matter of habit now so it hasn’t been an adjustment at all in the new Prius.

 

The A-pillar is easy. What's REALLY weird is the invisible entire front of the car. Thank goodness for parking sensors.

Do they warn about high parking stop blocks that will crunch your grill?

I noticed last night I was over a parking stop block, and saw my life flash before me.

 

Definitely some new observations regarding aerodynamics:

 

Interesting review from the other side of the pond. I had a few spots where I couldn't follow to the letter
what was being described, though for the most part I was absorbing all that was discussed.
At the end, the comment of, paraphrased here " this is not a baby hauler" was interesting to me, because my significant other is hard to convince of most anything I believe is efficient. Since this is my case, I wonder if the reviewer meant that " even if you like this new Prius, it might not be so easy to convince your significant other it is the right choice the family, especially if the driving is going to be shared by two or more drivers, etc, etc. ...

 

Did anyone notice the cup holder covers at one minute and 10 seconds in the to the video? Odd.

 

Those are an option in Japan. You can also see the optional storage compartment option behind the infotainment display. It can be configured as either storage(the missing spot for sunglasses ) or as a Kleenex dispenser. The one option we don't see is the trash containers that go into each door pocket.

Wow! That’s an amazing list of accessories I guess obviously only for the Japanese market. So cool.

I am really interested in these trunk organizers, and I wonder if they would fit the prime (if even able to get here in the US..

Also, I recall a lot of folks asking about chains… see below. Granted I can’t read Japanese and it’s possible those are only for the base model 17” wheels.

 

Sorry, but you're out of luck on both accounts. The trunk organizer option in Japan is actually the deck trays that come standard on the XLE and LTD in North America; they don't fit into the Primes. And the tire chains are only for the 17" steel wheel, Japan-only option.

Tip: Google products have a translate function built in. If you open the pdf in Chrome, you can highlight a section, then right-click and select "Translate section into English". Another crude hack I sometimes use is to grab my phone and open Google Lens. At the bottom of the screen, you can swipe over to translate. Then just point the phone at the text you want to translate and it will do its best. I assume Apple products have something similar, but I'm not familiar with them.

 

Explain. I don't follow.

 

The question is whether the parking sensor warns if you come too close to a parking curb (cement block) at, or slightly above, grill level. My experience is the sensor does not warn in this situation. So with the limited view of where the front of the car is, you need to be careful or you will bang your grill.

 

I still don't follow. Grill height? Can't even envision...

Anytime I've pulled up to something "grill height", the sensors go off for me. They're all around the bumper...

 

My experience is that it works really well. It always warns me when something is at or above grill level. Fortunately, most curb stops are below the front spoiler.

 

Too literal interpretation of “too high to go under the car”

 

Well I have come very close to a curb stop at a pizza place I go to with no warning. I think I would not clear the grill, it would hit. Guess I could test that out for this group and report back.

 

Envision: Picture that curb stop about 3-4 inches higher.

 

Okay. So you're talking about scraping your spoiler then? It was talk about the grill that was throwing me off. The grill is traditionally the area above the bumper.



But there is an area with shutters down low too so...

The interesting thing is that the G5 has more clearance than the G4. When I first got my 2019, I was scraping the bottom of the spoiler like crazy! It got to the point where I was scared to pull all the way in to any parking spot with a concrete stop or curb.

It's going to be driver beware on anything unusually large that you consider "driving over". The good news is, the G5 will clear all standard-sized obstacles unlike its predecessor.

I do get an alarm when driving up to the edge of parking lots and such where there's plenty of clearance to pull over the curb. I don't think parking stops alone will ever trigger it. If they're as tall as your "grill" they surely will though.

360 camera would be really helpful here.

 

Already addressed.

As for detecting things that could safely go under the car, having it alert for those will result in false, nuisance alerts. As when approaching a ramp or road debris. Too many of those and people will just turn it off or ignore it.

 

Are the 360° cameras available on the top end versions? They've been out for over ½ decade - so I'd imagine so.
