I have a 2012 Prius. After getting out inspected, (at a sketchy Monroe garage), it started making a noise.
    - It's only when the gas engine is running
    - it changes sound as the RPMs change
    - it isn't always there
    - sounds like something is getting flicked around like a playing card in bicycle wheels.

I changed out the transaxle fluid & the coolants for the inverter and the engine. This didn't change the noise. I had the dealer take a look, but because the sound is intermittent, they couldn't find a thing. I'm running out of ideas here. I also recorded a short sound clip, unfortunately I can't seem to upload the MP3 file.

My 13 has been doing the same thing for about 2 months now and it's very aggravating and it's quite loud actually It sounds like the bicycle card in the spokes of the kids bike wheel but now imagine the cards being made out of a PVC plastic It's a grating noise kind of. It only seems to happen when either the ice engine is off and is called upon to come back on refire whatever it does and it does this just for literally tenths of seconds and if I step on the gas it goes away almost immediately It's not like the springs on the torque plate or bottoming out or anything like that It's more like the flywheeler that hunk of steel on the back maybe not tighten down the spec but the guy who changed the engine is pretty good about that stuff so I have my old transmission I could put back in but I imagine you haven't changed your transmission so this will help me diagnose mine have you changed out your engine or anything like that?

I'm fixing to take my 2013 persona off the street until I figure out what this nonsense is It almost sounds like the death rattle from the misfiring when the head gasket is bad this is not what this is at all this is like when there's something out of sync It sounds like it's coming from right at the transmission and engine connection where that torque plate the whatever it is 6 or 7 volts that hold on the flywheel which I don't know is a real flywheel in this instance but yeah I guess it is but like I say my mechanic is very funny about all that I can't imagine that being loose but that's just kind of what it would sound like to me anyway but it's more like of a plastic sound like a piece of the intake tubing stuck in the fan blades for nearly a miniscule second as soon as you step on the gas it stops the engines whirring away and you're up at 70 miles an hour before you know it that sound hadn't even been able to start good and then when you slow down everything's fine until you go to slightly press the gas while you're going down the city and town streets just to move the car a little bit rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle rattle but if there's nobody in front of me and I could just step on the gas smartly none of that happens.

I haven't done any significant changes to the car. Transactional fluid, regular oil changes, tires and brakes as they needed it. Nothing out of the ordinary

Well yeah you're well into the head gasket leak mileage between $170 and 230 usually this seems to be the prime time I have not looked at everybody's stats but this is that range so what this time that's what I start looking for with some intent you know I'm looking for evidence of that but this that I have is not that and I was hoping maybe it's not that too but like I said it's going to be very hard to diagnose I've taken this thing to a transmission guy and got him to ride with me and hear the noise and he's dumbfounded and he works on a lot of CVT front drive things not necessarily Prius but Yaris and Corolla and Camry Nissans muranos with the big CVTs in those and he was completely stumped and he heard it no question I made it do it as much as I could while we rode and he was like holy crap but he said you know it sounds like something that's out of tolerance He said eventually which is what I thought too it'll just fly apart whatever it is I don't think it's reciprocating mass in the engine It's right there at the joint of the engine and transmission over towards the transmission at one point I could get it to do it when the car was in the driveway just running and someone sitting in the driver seat fluttering the gas and then can't remember if he put it in reverse or how exactly but I got to see the equipment engine trans while it was doing it and the noise was specifically coming from the transmission side of the business.

you don't have any trouble lights yet, so there might still be time.

pick up dr. prius and scan the battery module voltages and % life expectancy
